Kenmore Fridge 4 yrs old side by side model not cooling

A few days ago humming began in the back of the fridge  and slowly things started to defrost in the freezer.  Sounds like the compressor wants to kick on constantly with high pitch humming noise but then goes off.  Ice maker can't make ice, water is warm and fridge is warm.  I had someone check the fridge in November when this happened (lasted 24 hours) but it was fine once the repair guys came. They said if it happens again to call them back.  Does this sound like a compressor problem.  Sears says they will pay for the compressor if it is diagnosed faulty compressor but not labor.   Are these symptoms consistent with compressor problems? What does labor for something like this cost approx?  HELP! Julie

Hi. Your refrigerator is under 5 years and the compressor is still under full warranty. Call Sears and get it fixed parts and labor included. There should be no charge to you whatsoever. Make sure they understand that on the phone when you set up the appointment. You would be better off having a different technician from Sears come out to your house, as the one that came was not honest with you. Good luck, Mack

Fridge warm, freezer has frost on back panel & is defrosting, fans work, just changed defrost thermostat, no air is moving from freezer side to fridge side, drain pan under fridge is dry

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

Freezer works, Fridge doesn't

The defrost timer inside the fresh food compartment is most likely the problem. Need to turn the timer slowly clockwise until compressor stops. I should remain off for about 25 minutes. During that time the freezer should be in defrost. You may be able to open the freezer door and hear the crackling and sizzle of the defrost taking place. If the timer does not restart the refrigerator after 25 minutes the turn the timer clockwise again until the compressor restarts. Number 6 in photo below is the defrost timer. The replacement timer part number is 482493. Here is a photo. Thanks Sea Breeze

Kenmore side by side Refrigirator

Sounds like you have a defrost problem. The timer could be playing up and taking too long to defrost, which causes the evaporator to ice up, hence no cold air to the fridge and the water line freezes up, hence no water dispensed. When the timer does eventually defrost the fridge then everything returns to normal. This could also be caused by a faulty defrost terminator or bad connection on the defrost element.
