By akhterms on Nov 09, 2009

" "
I have an old Quantum Fireball Ict 20 3.5" hard disk which I want to install in dell 9200 dimension PC. I already installed the hard disk in the provided bay but not sure what kind of cables I would need to connect it. I will appreciate any advice in this respect. thanks.

- Thanks to all 4 repliers. I am still confused. Sorry for not mentioning earlier that I also took out the ribbon like cable from the old computer but I could not find a slot on mother board in my new PC (dell dimension 9200) to plug in. Also I found that the power supply connector does not reach to hard disk. Any advice?

if it's old it's probably IDE also known as PATA. it looks like a wide ribbon. There should be a header on the motherboard that looks exactly like the plug on the back of the hard drive. It will be labeled IDE1 probably if you have it. Old motherboards used to have 2 IDE headers, modern ones have one or none. The ribbon will have three plugs--one for the mobo, and then two spaced closer together for the master and the slave. You need to hook it to the appropriate plug (master if it's the only device on the ribbon) and make sure the jumpers on the HD are set properly to make it self-identify as the master. Good luck!

- You can get an extender for the Molex connector. Does the mobo have a ribbon already being used? maybe you can use the free plug on that.

Also the 80-conductor cable allows faster transfer speeds if your HD and mobo can do it.

Is this a IDE drive? If yes you need a IDE cable 40 or 80 conductor. (40 is standard, 80 allows 'cable select' feature) Make sure you have the old drive set as slave and the primary drive is set for master if you are standard ribbon cable.

Normally, I would expect if you have a IDE drive that you have a cable with two connectors already on it, one for the motherboard and one each for each of two drives. If not, you can get a cable from a FixYa.com advertiser or a local computer shop.

Serial connection, you will have to check *********** board to see if you have a port.

Thank yo ufor posting your quesiton on FixYa.com

- Your new computer does not support IDE drive. It evidently, based on what you are saying, a serial interface.

You may be able to get a IDE intereface on a PCI based card and use it that way. I have such a card in the basement ... somewhere ...

Otherwise, tuck your drive in a drawer for the time being ...

More than likely you will need a IDE cable or EIDE, but you will need a ide controller card, unless that computer has one on board the motherboard.

The hard drive is probably an IDE hard drive.
The cable you require is a IDE cable which has a 40 pin connectors.
If the hard drive has 50 pins then the hard drive is a SCSI device. If it is a SCSI drive then get back to me for further instructions.
The motherboard normally has two IDE controllers, the first controller will have the C drive (it will be jumpered as master drive) and on the same cable there will be another connector which may have a CD or DVD drive attached to this connector (this will be jumpered as a slave drive).
The second controller and IDE cable may have the CD or DVD drive attached it instead on the first IDE controller/cable.
I suggest you attach the 20Gb hard drive on the second controller and cable and jumper it as a slave drive. If the CD is also on this cable then check to see if the jumper is set as a slave drive then the jumper on the hard drive must be set as a master drive (they can't be both jumpered as a slave or master).

Hello,

It will need and IDE cable to connect to your system. Make sure the drive is setup as a slave drive if it is connected to the same IDE cable as your primary hard drive or the optical drive.

Good Luck
