mp3 is actually a file format that made larger audio files take up less data space. If you have mp3 audio files on a compact disc(CD) it may play it if the player is designed to recognize the format. This was a much bigger issue years ago. Only way to tell is check the manufacturers specifications or simply try it. Good luck.
Your reader has compatibility issue with the disk. Not all disks can be read you will always find some disk that refuses to be recognized. Not the disk fault - player idiosyncrasy. Happens.

Unfortunately,
if
the player will no longer read any commercial cd that you attempt to
play or MP3 disks, the unit is defective and needs to be replaced. The unit has a 90 day warranty from
the date of purchase. You will need the receipt in order to receive a
warranty exchange.
If
you feel this solution doesn't deserve a good rating, please let me
know why so that I may better assist you. If there is anything more I
can do to help, I will!
Try playing the problem disks on your PC. If they wont play and the "Finalised" disks do then try recording a further brief clip on the problem disk. If that works then attempt to "Finalise" again. Can you play the problem disks in the Camera by the way?
I updated my firmware from 1413 to 1416 found on avforums. This is for european units. I suggest you also complain to Toshiba Japan as there are known issues with the xs32. We all need a firmware update. See AVforums.
My unit will not recognise RAM discs anymore - even those that I had previously used.
Have you thought of replacing the DVD drive. See AVforums.
