I changed from a win.98 to an xp the scanner quit

I changed from a win.98 to an xp. the scanner quit and so did the 832c printer ,but I disconnected the scanner and plugged the printer directly into the Hp printer (parallel) port and it works fine. When the scanner was plugged in in series with the printer the light was on in the scanner as long as the computer was on, but there was nothing else,and the printer would run but it put out a bunch of nonsince,. Can I save my scanner without reinstalling the 98?
