I have the same problem here has anyone found a fix... the lights all work other than the colored display

  • Carl Holguin Jan 29, 2008

Yup, I have exactly the same problem. Sounds like Kenwood should jump on this one....

I have the same problem. It's been intermittent for about a month and now it's officially dead. Everything else is fine - just no display.

  • stirfry17 Feb 05, 2008

I have the same problem, any fix? Anyone know the standard warranty?

same problem... was intermitent now gone

  • supermr2 Feb 24, 2008

same problem. After a year. returned it to the place I bought it from and they swapped out the deck for me.

  • photonut1 Mar 31, 2008

    Hi All-

Well all I've done so far is check my records and noticed its over a year so likely out of warrantee. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Phil

I have the same problem my unit is 1 year and 5 days since purchase

The distributor website I went to says Part # A64-3814-02 does not include the LCD display it says display part number is 3-BT-235INK I ordered this part number and will see if it is correct.

  • Jomark1973 May 30, 2008

My dpx-501 is doing the same thing. The LCD display finally went out, however everything else works fine. I just ordered the LCD replacement and hope this is the solution. If anyone has had good results with replacing this, please let me know.

  • scott0825 Aug 19, 2008

Add me to the list of DPX-501 owners who has just experienced a
complete LCD blackout. I just ordered the LCD replacement part (part #
3-BT-235INK - $30.99 plus shipping). I hope that it comes with easy to
install instructions and that this solves the problem. I think Kenwood
should own up to this since it seems to be systemic to this unit and
offer the part for free. But we all know that the likelihood of that
    happening is slim to none.

  • dazzla2000 Aug 19, 2008

    Me too. Same problem.

  • Anonymous Oct 04, 2008

The stereo works fine but the backlight went out. cd player is just out of warranty

  • severedlips Oct 14, 2008

same problem. Kenwood plays dumb when I contacted them. My retailer is no help and the "authorized Kenwood service technician" in my area gave me the run around.
guess I have to spring for the part...

  • iarocci Oct 19, 2008

Same problem here. Started happening on and off about 7 months ago, and finally went dark a few months ago. Ordered new LCD from East Coast. Thank everyone for the info.

  • templeowls98 Oct 20, 2008

Same here. Mine just started happening about 1.5 years old. I will also order a new display. I have gotten used to it but it is nice to have a display.

  • iarocci Oct 26, 2008

Here's my report. The LCD does NOT fix the problem. Does anyone know what the real problem is?

  • david142 Nov 05, 2008

Got the same problem with mine. LCD just went blank. Notice that someone has suggested re-soldering some dry joints on the PCB. Would like some more info and how it will solve the problem. Has anyone tried this?

  • pwc_calc Dec 23, 2008

I've have same issue with display - worked fine for almost 2 years, then one day nothing. Everything else appears to work fine. Agree eveyone needs to voice to Kenwood, may be manufacturing/design issue. Hate to spend $50 on a replacement display that may fix the problem for a system I only spent $220 on and could happen again down the road. Will update post with any solution.

Well, my display went out earlier this week. Took it apart and found out that the LCD on the 501dpx was burnt out. I also found out all we have to do is replace the whole faceplate instead of the system

The part number for the replacement front panel (not the cd unit) A64-3814-02. Cost will be around $50 on Kenwood's part distributor websites.

All you have to do is unscrew top metal panel off and unscrew one of the bottom screw on the left side to pop off the panel display. Remember this is at your own risk - whatever happens is your responsibility.

  • TKEYZ76 Apr 07, 2008

Oh yea, everyone who has this problem needs to voice it to Kenwood USA. I called them at their toll-free number and they said they never heard of this problem on the DPX501

  • eljbee Sep 09, 2010

Hate to ask a stupid question, but do you have to remove the DPX501 from the dash in order to replace the display? In other words, what exactly do you mean by unscrewing the top metal panel off and unscrew one of the bottoms screws on the left side? Thanks.

So my display has been out for right around a year now...well today it came back on!
I have no idea why.
I started using the CD player recently...
I fiddled with the menu today ie. audio settings and walaa it came on.
I've used the menu before this so not sure what happened.
Hopefully it stays on.

My unit is just over two years old and started acting up this summer. Seemed to be temperature related, display would work when unit warmed up. This fall unit display was out for three straight weeks, even if warm. Fiddling with the dimmer switch for the instrument lights on a trip a couple weeks ago and the display resumed working. Reading the manual to ID the dimmer wire to maybe cut it I read that the dimmer function can be turned off using the menu which I did. Display has now worked for two weeks in warm and cool weather.

I also have this problem and I was excited to see a solution here. I found the faceplate at Kenwood parts distributor, however their online catalog gave the following product description:

The display part costs $31 plus shipping vs. $50 for the faceplate. I ordered the display and will attempt repair within two weeks. I'll try to remember to post my result here.

About my sterio kenwood,if i on my sterio is protect.only i saw in monitor is protect

If your set is displaying the "Protect" display on the display, it means that your player has a serious issue or failure. It is possible that your output has failed and you will have to take the set out and disconnect the output stage. The main feed voltage to the output IC must be disconnected and the set powered on again. You must attempt to do this only if familiar or else take helpt and identify with this advice. Once the IC has been identifed replace after you find if any speakers also have shorted. replace and test. If your output seems fine , a possible short on the drive board of the cd or the cd processor stage can also be deffective. Hope you get this right, Helpful? Good day

Kenwood DPX501 Display is off.

These units are all made in China and there really is no "fix"...they simply replace them under warranty or swap out for a refurb. Sorry, you're not alone.
Good Luck

DPX-501 LCD Repair

I got the new display part from the Kenwood supplier on LI, NY but there are dozens of pins on lining both sides of the display, each 1/16" from the other. I don't have confidence in my ability to detach the old and solder the new to the main board without further disaster.

Choices for me now are:

- continue "flying blind" - most likely solution for the moment.
- pay someone to do it - includes removal and being without a head unit for an unspecified time, plus cost.
- replace - I'd like to change brands although it means replacing the Kenwood satellite unit too, so more cost.

This hasn't been a good advertisement for Kenwood. People are impressed by the sound in my car, but not so much by the blank screen, guesswork changing stations etc.

I really like the unit, and the display was great while it worked: exactly as long as the warranty. I can't recommend Kenwood.

DPX-501 Root Menu Help

I emailed Kenwood USA and they gave me the number to an authorized Kenwood service center on the east coast( New Jersey). I sent them the receiver, and within 2 days they sent it back completely fixed. They even fixed an error code I didn't even know wasn't working. Price on the repair will vary depending on the problem. If it is fairly new and still under warranty then there should not be any cost to repair it.

Kenwood dpx-501

I just solved the problem with my kenwood dpx mp 2090U - (looks similar with 501). FL Display with single CD, USB, 2 Din.
I should share this......... as I received the clue from someone that share the same case to me . Thanks to Mr,Nasirbaek from Indonesia,
The problem is at the main board . Dry (bad) soldering occurred. There are more then 5 resistors in series configuration. The resistor is quiet big (1.5mm x 3.5 mm, surface mount type R) about 2,7Ohms.The position is start from near usb port cable and ended to near big transistor (1 x 1.5 cm power transistor). After resoldering check with multitester to make sure that all R are connected in series configuration.
Just open 3 screws to access the main board. 1 at the top case. 2 at cd assembly, then Carefully take out the CD and the CD ribbon cable.
good luck.
