Question about Soltek SL-K8AN2E (SL-K8AN2E-GR) Motherboard

Continous Beeping sound

Hi,

There is a continuous beeping sound whenever I turn on the power. Initially, I thought it was the PSU. But with the PSU not connected to the motherboard, there isn't any beeping sound. Once I attach the PSU to the motherboard and turn on the power, there is a beeping sound.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

Yes, this is a working computer for a few years. Did not notice when the beeping sound surface.

Beside the irritating beeping sound, the computer is still working fine. I am still using it daily without any problem.

Just trying to get rid of the beeping sound. I notice that the beeping sound is there even before I boot up the computer. It start beeping once I turn on the power switch on the mains with the computer in standby (off) mode.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

This computer is still working fine except for the irritating beeping sound.

How do I verify that the sound is coming frm the motherboard or the PSU? When I disconnect the PSU to the motherboard and turn on the power to the PSU, there isn't any beeping sound. Once I attach the PSU to the motherboard, turn on the power to the PSU but not power up the CPU. The beeping sound is there. Is this conclusive enough that the beeping sound is from the motherboard?

My computer started beeping constantly recently. It stops periodically for a few minutes before starting up again. It starts up normally and runs, although a bit slower. It freezes up occassionally now when it used to not do this. So far, today, it hasn't beeped yet at all, but it beeped all day yesterday. I replaced the power cord, checked and saw the power source (internal is adequate for what I have attached to it. Changed the internal battery. Reset the BIOS and clock.Cleaned the RAM and re-seated them, compressed air cleaned out everything. Disconnected the external drives and powered up each hardware item individually to see if it was a hardware anomoly. Did same with the new RAM cards ( 1GB card each, two cards).Used a new higher juels powerstrip, restored to factory TWICE after system restore to good point didn't resolve the issue. And no results. Even went thru the router to see if the router was the problem. I know my actual internet speed is a lot slower than what I should be getting. Checked and cleaned both the chassis fan and CPU fan. Is there anything else I should check? And can a diagnostic locate this issue, or will I be wasting my money on that? The computer is a SOny VAIO VGC-RB52 running Windows XP Pro, I added a PCi card with 7 slot USB/firewire ports, originally HD was replaced with Seagate 500GB old 250GB drive is now the slave drive.Have 1TB external Smsung drive in a Roseville enclsure with fan, second external is a reformatted Maxtor 500GB, have airlink router, SBC DSL modem,HP scanner/fax/printer,TiVo transfer device, Dazzle transfer device, upgraded RAM to 2-1GB 4200 DDR2 RAM.Any other info, please ask. Appreciate any help!!!

Hi neosw,

Could you provide a little more detail?

Was this a previously working set-up or is this a new build?

If this was a previously working set-up have you changed anything?

When you switch on the PC

  • do you see anything on the screen, does the monitor remain in standby?
  • are any of the fans running?
  • does the hard drive spin up?
  • does the beeping sound stop after a short while?
The reason I ask these questions is because a continues beeping usually means that the BIOS is not seeing the processor, or that the power to the processor is not correct. With some BIOS manufactures it can also mean the processor clock speed is not set
correctly.

Please don't take this the wrong way but...if you provide greater detail in your question, the easier it for us to diagnose your problem, otherwise we can only make educated guesses.

I hope this has been of some help.

Regards,

Spare head 2

    Hi neosw,

Are you certain the sound is coming from the motherboard, even when the pc is not running?
If it is then it may be that the power supply is leaking power the motherboard. Without power the PC speaker cannot make any sounds. That is a odd one...because you say it's present even when the PC is running, this is very confusing. Please try to verify the sound is actually coming from the motherboard and not the power supply.

    Regards,

    Spare head 2.

    Hi newosw,

If you can, open the PC check to see the PC speaker is connected to the
motherboard. If it is try disconnecting it, but make a note of how it
connect to the PC. If you listen very carefully to the PSU at the back
of the PC do you still here anything with the speaker unplugged and the
    PC switched off?

If the noise is coming from the power supply this may indicate an impending failure.

    Regards,

Continous beeps usually mean the motherboard or the power supply, Try another power supply first and see if it will boot, if not the motherboard is faulty, if the prossesor was faulty you would no beeps the fans would run but nothing on the screen. hope this helps.

Base on the post codes this continuous beeping indicates a power problem. Atypically this is a power supply problem and it will need to be replaced.
