screen does not come on . cylinder shaped light (by the power light and on/off light) is not lighting up.

Check your battery and power supply, take out the battery and connect the power supply see if it will turn on..

Sound like your Hard Disk drive is not starting up. They are normaly easy to replace, but i would try removing it & putting it into a hdd caddy, there is 2 types, 1 is the old IDe connection & the other is the Sata connection the bigger of the 2 is the IDE and has 2 lines of pins the Sata is normaly a female connector on the drive.
If you can get hold of a caddy insert it & connect it to a freiends pc or laptop to see if it works, it saves buying a new hdd if its not faulty.
