Magic Chef Defrost problem - need defrost heater

I have a Magic Chef mcbr1000w. The auto defrost is not working. The defrost timer is fine, and the defrost thermometer appears to have resistance using my multimeter. I removed the defrost thermometer, and still the defrost heater did not come on. I believe I need to replace my defrost heater.
My problem is...they no longer make the defrost heater that fits the MCBR1000W.
Can I use another defrost heater, or are they made specifically for the unit? Can't I just wire nut a different heater in? Any idea which heater might fit my compartment?
Thanks for any help.

Here is what I did to the heater. I touched both ends with my multimeter (as the unit was unplugged), and the needle maxed out to infinity. My defrost thermostat gave me a positive reading after it was sitting in the freezer for a while.

I tried calling the number, and they directed me directly to mcappliances.com, who told me the part is not made anymore. The generic number for the part is 140499, but even that can not be found. The link you gave is a whirlpool part. Does this heater fit the Magic Chef MCBR1000W? http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_d...

I think I may now need a defrost timer. When I follow the directions to test the contacts, I get the exact same reading before and after turning the timer to the click.
Are defrost timers all the same? For example, is the generic GE WR9X330 adequate, or does the defrost timer have to match the exact model? Many of them look the same. Is the only difference the timing settings?

I pulled the timer and tested the resistance levels using the #3 as the base. I tested 3=-2, 3-1 and 3-4. I then rotated the switch until it clicked, and tested the resistance again. The readings were exactly the same. Every time I rotate and hear the click, the readings are the same. According to my research, something should be changing when it clicks. When the fridge runs, it never seems to go into defrost mode.

i just looked up your timer at repair clinic.com,used your model number and part number 1206533 came up saying this is your timer, the timers are different, they tell the machine how long and when to go into defrost, but your parts guy should be able to tell you what timer you could use in that machine, good luck what is wrong with the timer, what is the fridge doing?

  • Sal De Nov 15, 2009

i just turn timer knob until it clicks into defrost and if heater that i know is a good heater comes on i know the timer is bad because it's not goig into defrost by itself.

i think the post farthest from the other three is neutral, the middle one of the three that are together is power and the other two are defrost and cool

I have a 13 month old apartment size Magic Chef refrige. It stopped geting cold about 1 month age. I uplugged and it work fine for until now. Same thing. Left it unplugged for a while and now it works...

The fault is very much with the auto defrosting of your fridge. When the firdge stops cooling you are unplugging the fridge to allow it to defrost. As there is so much frost in the cooling coils there will not be any convection of the cool air from the coil as it gets blocked. So after defrost the coils get cleared and works fine till the next time frost appears. So first of all remove the freezer compartment rear covers to access the cooling coils, check for break in wires to thermostat, to the deffrosting heater or open coils in the heaters. Now trace the wires to the defrosting timer which is a 8 hours timer for defrosting the coils by the heaters. You can see if the timer is working. Now one of these could be the culprit but you will have to make sure by testing each one and confirming before replacing. Please do this step by step. Hope you get it right. If not familiar get help. Good day

Magic Chef Side by side...freezer side frosting and Refrigerator side not cooling

Your defrost timer, defrost thermostat and defrost heater need to be checked.
The heater and thermostat are inside the freezer behind the back freezer panel.
The timer is underneath the refrigerator either the left front or right rear.

Defrost timer might not be working

twist your defrost timer with a screwdriver clocwise till it will click and compressor shut off, check voltage on defrost heater. You should have 120volts.When wait 20 min if compressor start up back and defrost heater is off ...your timer is fine. It can come on early then 20 min....
P.S. defrost heater located on the bottom of the coil, also make sure your defrost thermostat is frozen when you going to check voltage on your heater. Thermostat located on the top of your coil.

Our compact refrigerator doesn't get very cold,

One is the coldest. Post a model number and I may can help more. If it's a manual defrost then defrost it. If it's auto defrost- If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Our Magic Chef fridge model # MCBR1000W does not seem to be keeping the fridge part cool enough, but still keeps the items in the freezer section frozen. The compressor is working, so not sure why this is...

yes the freezer door not closing properly will effect the refrigerator. also check in the freezer back wall and bottom for any frost buildup. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

MAGIC CHEF MCBR1000W

Had trouble finding a diagram with this model # but most common defrost problems are bad defrost thermostat, timer/control board, or a little more rare is the defrost heater.
