What valves are to be adjusted on a lawnmower to keep it idling

There are not but two valves, intake and exhaust, and I doubt they need adjusting. Matter of fact I doubt anyone could do much to adjust them. Sounds like to me you've got a fuel mixture problem which could be as simple as changing the air filter. If that doesn't help it's likely carburetor related. If you have a bowl type carburetor, take it off and clean out the bowl with carburetor cleaner and make sure the float moves freely up and down. While you're at it spray it thorough all the jets in the carburetor. If you don't have a bowl type, buy a new set of diaphrams and gaskets and replace the old ones.

I have a MTD Model #11B-509B205 lawnmower with constant speed control. The speed does not stay at a high speed anymore. Something broke. What?

IS THE CONSTANT SPEED CONTROL CABLE DRIVEN? IF SO, CHECK FOR A KINKED CABLE, OR REPLACE. CHECK SPRINGS AND LINKAGE AT CARB ALSO FOR BINDING

Lawnmower will start, but dies. want to install new seat and needle.

Mower starts, then dies (user said)...classic symptons of a clogged main jet (the brass bolt for float bowl). In other words, fuel flow is NOT continuous through the carburetor.

2008 mtd lawnmower tries to start when sprayed with carb cleaner but stops after 3 seconds

If the spark plug is in great condition, remove and clean the carburetor. This will require soaking if needed with a good solvent or carb cleaner and compressed air to blow out the tiny passages that are clogged for the idle jet circuit and high speed circuit.

I have a MTD Honda Lawnmower that is having idling trouble. It starts great, but once the chock has disengaged itself the engine surges. If I continue to hold the choke on just a little, it runs just...

Generally this indicates a "lean" condition in the carburetor and there are no adjustments. Depending on your abilities, the best fix is to remove the carburetor and clean all the metering passages/jets. In some cases you are better off just replacing the carburetor. I have seen some Honda carbs. as low as $15-$20. Hope this helps to some degree.

MTD 42 inch hydrostatic drive lawnmower

1...first and foremost check the fluid level and top off with mobil 1 full synthetic 20w50 oil,
2...check the the engine pulley for wear
3...check idler arm spring tention.
inside yout transmission is a center pump section and swash plates and a set of 6-8 pistons , if dirt is allowed into the transmission it causes severe wear to these parts

my recomendation would be to dissasemble the transmission and inspect the pump center section and swash plates for wear....look for tiny scratches on the bearing surfaces, if it is worn then replace parts as needed. these worn parts will cause the transmission to "growl" or as you say "grind"
