Laser on cd rom is bad, but you have one potenciometar near laser (small), and you can try fix it (turn around softly).
If you still have the same problem, you can change the laser, but it is the best solution buy another.
It might need to be replaced. Check the CD type. There are also CDs that certain drives does not accept. Check if it has a + or - sign beside it. Also check if your CD-ROM can read a + or - CD type. If you'd rather replace it, try buying the one that can read +/- CD. I also recommend buying a "DVD-RW +/-" instead of an ordinary CD-ROM.
