Freezer is very cold and refrig is cool

Hi
First I had a problem with the start relay fix it and both sides seemed to work well for about a week. Then the refrig seemed to have stop cooling. I'm thinking it might be the diffuser or/and the refrig thermostat? Not sure. Can someone please help me I really don't want to buy a new refrig this KitchenAid SxS is only 6 years old.

    Themackshack,

Thanks for the info I checked it out and the diffuser seems to be working fine. The diffuser is wide open and only a little air is circulating through it. Any other suggestions? This is so aggravating!! This is my kitchenaid model #KSRS25IHWH00.

If you have a little air coming thru the diffuser, you either have a blocked return air with frost or the elbow behind the diffuser in the freezer area has frost build up. It sounds like the freezer door got left open partially for a period of time to allow moisture to frost up those two areas. If you have another refrigerator, unplug this one for a few days with the doors open and everything should thaw out. Otherwise you will have to take the refrigerator apart to access them. Good luck, Mack

    Mack,

I did try that with the diffuser I took freezer apart to access the diffuser duct. Could it be the evaporator fan not blowing at full rpm's? That's the only thing that I think it could be, but when I put my hand in front of the freezer duct up by the icemaker it's blowing like crazy. I even have my freezer setting in the middle and refrig on 6. I just can't understand why it's not circulating air to the refrig.

If the diffuser duct(plastic elbow that directs the air into the diffuser from inside the freezer becomes blocked with frost) is clear to the back of the diffuser damper, then the return is blocked. The return air opening starts in the refrigerator section and has a small grill over it on the lower left side of the refrigerator section. It has an opening that goes to the bottom right inside the freezer section just under the evaporator coil. Take hot water and pour it thru the return vent opening(remove the grill cover first) and keep it up untill you see water coming out the opening in the freezer evaporator area. A good test to see if this is blocked is to open the refrigerator door when the evaporator fan is running and put you hand in front of the air diffuser. If little to no air is coming out, open the freezer door while your hand is still in front of the diffuser and if the air now comes out ok, the return is blocked. You would be suprised how much ice will form and block that return air duct. Refrigerators are just like your central heat or air conditioning. It has a supply air and return air. Alot of people don't know that the return air duct is there. Your problem has nothing to do with dust on the condenser coil. You freezer section is working ok which means the compressor and freon is ok. Good luck, Mack

When mine quit cooling I cleaned the dust off of the coils underneath and it started working like normal again. The major warehouse/hardware stores carry a brush specially for it. But first i used my vacuum with the pointy attachment.

Hi. As long as the evaporator motor is working its one of the two as you mentioned. If the compressor and evaporator fan is running and the refrigerator door has been open, with the freezer door closed, reach into the back left top where the diffuser is located and put your hand in front of it and see if any air is coming out. You should feel a moderate breeze. If not, open the freezer door with your hand in front of the diffuser and if the air comes out good now, the return air is blocked (normally ice build up). If no air is felt, the damper is most likely bad. Use a mirror and see if the damper is closed or frosted up. This can happen from the refrigerator or freezer door being left open for some time.If you have a mechanical damper, make sure it is set in the middle. You want more air to the refrigerator section. Email me on ebay, user name themackshack if you need parts! Good luck, Mack

Sounds like you need a new relay for the compressor. Unplug from wall and check the compressor see if realy that is attached to pins on compressor, is burnt.

make sure the return air is open, that is a vent on the side wall of the refrigerator above the crispers on the center mullion. and check to see if the evaporator fan motor is running.

Kenmore Elite refrigerator stops cooling - Relay keeps cycling

the relay on the compressor is most likely the culprit part# 8201786 you can buy it at the local sears parts and repair center it is very easy to replace it. your refrig compartment will start warming up soon. to prevent damage to your compressor probably a good idea to unplug the refrig until you get the part replaced..
