Good day, 1. There is a modulating thermostat that is located in the top rear of food compartment. It is controlled to open more or less depending on the owners choice, by a knob which is located near the front of the compartment and controls the opening with a small notched belt. On a good day it is a bear to access. However, if that control fails it could be denied cold air from the freezer, where it gets it's cold air.
2. The defrost system may have failed. Frost on the rear panel of the freezer compartment will be your first clue. The defrost system is made up of 3 parts. A. The timer, which is located in the top of the fresh food section just behind the knob that controls the temperature. Using a very small screw driver, you can turn the shaft clockwise until the compressor shuts off. Leave it that way with the machine left on, and wait 45 minutes. If the machine starts back up, the timer is O.K. B. Behind the rear panel of the freezer, is the main heater, mounted to the evaporator coils. (Looks a lot like a bake element in an electric range). It can be checked with an ohm meter, but rarely fails. C. The defrost thermostat. A small round disk mounted on the top of the evaporator. Accounts for most defrost failures.
P.S. Yes, it is a difficult and time consuming machine to work on.

I have a Amana refrig. bottom freezer model DRB1901C. It is located in the garage western NY.(current temperature low -mid 30's) I noticed yesterday the freezer was open slightly. Opened door and saw ice crystals, it seems evident compressor running for extended period of time. I shut it off and came back later, does not start up. I then place a haligon light at compressor and at entrance to freezer to warm up. Tested the thermostat in the freezer and it is ok. I'm looking for some advise on what to check out next. Does the compressor have a resettable overload? the refrig is approx. 3 years old (I think) I bought it last summer and it's in new condition, until yesterday... Thankyou for any advice...Tom
