Problem for Belkin (F1DL102P) 2-port KVM Switch

Mouse not detected with KVM switch

By Peter1 - usenet poster

I have two computers, one Windows ME and one Windows XP-MCE, sharing monitor,
ps/2 mouse & keyboard, and speakers via a Belkin 2-port KVM switch (model
F1DL102P).  Whenever I turn on the Win XP computer, the mouse is not
recognized.  I have to reboot and then it works fine.  If I turn on the Win
ME computer, it always works fine.  If I turn the Win ME computer first, then
turn on the Win XP machine, the latter recognizes the mouse w/o having to
reboot.  The Win XP machine is a Sony Vaio Desktop with a Vaio optical mouse
(model pcva-ms1pl).  It lists two mouse driver files, the standard
"mouclass.sys" and another named "i8042prt.sys"  I have tried uninstalling
these drivers, but XP automatically reloaded them after restart. How can I
get XP to recognize mouse at initial startup?

I fixed this problem on my KVM switch by connected the USB through a Hub...Comp1>>KVM Switch<< Hub << Comp 2. In my case, Computer 1 would connect and Computer 2 would not. I'm not sure why that fixed it, but i'm not complaining.

Thanks for the advice.  The Belkin manual suggested unplugging the mouse for
15 seconds and I've tried it (for varying lengths of time) but it still won't
recognize the mouse after I plug it back in.  The manual also said something
about making sure only one driver was assigned to the mouse.  Mine lists two
driver files, but they I couldn't delete just one.  It seems they are paired
together somehow.

Just as an experiment, rather than rebooting the XP, just unplug the
mouse for fifteen seconds and then plug it back in.  A handful of
other folks have reported mice not getting recognized at power up.
But most find it to be intermittent and often rare.  My guess is
that it might be a race condition at power up and nobody has tracked
this down and fixed it.  I finally stumbled on the unplug/plug method
of recovering from this and some others have reported success using
this.

This is the type of problem that occurs if an external power source is not
connected to the KVM switch.
