Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

No sound from digital out on PS3 using optical cable

I can not get my PS3 software version 2.0 to output sound to my Sony STR-D845 receiver through its optical output.I have tried changing the settings numerous times and also changing from bitstream to PCM, nothing seems to work. Cable and receiver work fine with other DVD players.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the optical cable does glow, so there is a signal. I also tried using another optical input on the receiver and still did not work....

  • pacopepe Jan 07, 2008

I have tried the TOSLINK cable with both DVD input and MD/DAT inputs. Also I have selected the input manually and still nothing.

I tried the power switch trick and got no results.

I'll try the firmware update next.

I do appreciate your help very much. I just hope I don't need to get a new receiver.

  • pacopepe Jan 07, 2008

The firmware update 2.10 apparently fixed the problem. Thank you very much for your help.

Does the end of the optical cable glow red when hooked up to your PS3 while the PS 3 is powered on? Look at it without the cable plugged into the STR-D845.

OK next, please tell me which of the 3 digital inputs are you using to for the TOSLINK cable (optical cable) MD/DAT IN TV/SAT IN or DVD/LD IN?

Also, please be sure that you do not have the STR-D845 set to AUTO INPUT SELECT. You need to manually select where the input is coming from.

Well I am STILL TRYING to help with your frustration! I will include a link that may be helpful. I believe that if you have considered the earlier posts, and nothing works, follow the problem along in this post:

You may need an updated firmware. There is a link in this post:

    http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/networ...

For an update, if you are not online with your PS3.

Also, please consider changing my rating, as I am completely voluntary in helping, no pay whatsoever! Good Luck with your problem, and keep me updated thru this post.

I have PS3 and Sony receiver, and I do not have any problems, so I am hopeful that you merely have a software issue.

One other trick that was mentioned was to use the power switch a the back of the PS3 to shut down the unit, then try to restart after you have made changes to your audio setup in PS3.

    Ok

Are you sure that you changed your settings in your PS3 correctly? I think that you have to go thru the menu completely to save it after entry.

I would check that again, also make sure you have selected a compatible setting (in the PS3 menu for Settings--Audio), I think I have the 5.1 dolby checked.

It sounds like the BDP unit is set to downmix PCM to the Optical Digital Audio output (the default). You need to change it to something like Dolby Digital. Crack the manual and look at all the digital audio settings you need to choose.

Hello,

Adjust the system's audio output settings. These settings are mainly used when the system is connected to audio devices that support digital audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment systems.
1.
Confirm the formats supported by your audio device.
Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
2.
Select in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) under in_setting.gif (Settings) in the home menu.
3.
Select [Audio Output Settings].
4.
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in use. If [Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed. If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically set the audio output format. (In this case, the HDMI device must be turned on.)

Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the in_left_key.gif button.
soundoutput002.jpg 7.
Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.
Hints
  • [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output connectors by default. If you change the audio output settings, audio will be output only from the connectors that were set.
  • If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI], or select in_setting.gif (Settings) > in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].
  • If you select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] in step 5, sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted from some audio devices.
  • When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
  • If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.

Hope it helped.

I am using an HDMI cable on my STR-DG710 and get no sound

A lot of devices like PS3, HD DVD Players, Cable boxes, etc., require you to define on the setup menu if sound will be coming out of the HDMI cable or not. Most of these devices can be set to HDMI Auto, but not all of them do.

I currently have both my Blu-ray and HD DVD player outputting both video and sound through my HDMI into my STR-DG710. Both devices are setup to output sound through the HDMI.

But like the other person on here posted, it you have a DVI to HDMI cable, you won't be getting sound. The only device that will output sound from a DVI to HDMI are select computer graphics adapters like the GeForce 9800 GT series video cards, and even not all of those will have this feature.

Hope this helps.

You need to go to SETTINGS, Sound Settings, then choose the correct output for your needs there.

Rear speakers not working on STR-K740P

The only way your surround sound will work is if you have either the coaxial or fiber optic digital hookups attached to a PS3/Blueray/DVD/Cable box/Satellite box that have digital sound outputs. If you are just using the 1970's version of the red/white audio cables that is stero only.

Playstation 3 audio connection into Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver

Is Yamaha HTR-640 a receiver? Try HDMI from PS3 to receiver or Sony HDTV. If HDMI from PS3 to receiver the you need and HDMI from receiver to out Sony HDTV. You could connect everything to receiver and HDMI out to HDTV. You can not have an HDMI cable AND an optical cable coming out of the PS3, only one or the other.
