Question about Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver

Won't power up off the cradle

I have tried the mode, power and reset "soft reset". I have upgraded the latest version off the webupdater. Says "charging complete" when on cradle or on the ac adaptor, but once removed from either, it is completely dead. It powers on and works when hooked to power.

I had a similar problem months ago and the reset worked. What am I doing wrong, or what else can I try?

I had exactly the same problem. What should I do? Sent my watch to garmin? or is there any other procedure that I can do to revive my garmin Forerunner 305?

    Many thanks.

My 305 is just over a year old and just about a month or so ago I
started have problems with the unit. Sometime it just would not power
on at all unless it was in the cradle for awhile, even though it was
fully charged. Once it was on it seem to work fine, so I didn't think
at that time it was the battery. I tried all the reset procedures that
Garmin suggested but still no joy! Now it will not power on unless
it's in the cradle, but once removed it shuts off immediately. I think
now the battery is problem. I was disappointed to read so many people
had the same problem and in most cases the unit was just out of
warranty like mine was. I hate to picking any sealed apart. They
never seem to go back together the same way, but if I find a
replacement battery for my 305 I will give it a go.

I had exactly the same symptoms as you (and tonerod)

Others may just want to be aware: When I tried to use WebUpdater to install 2.80 rather than the installed 2.70, it got only so far through the process, detecting the installed version and deleting it but (I presume because of connection problems), failing to install the latest version, leaving a "No software" message on the unit (although subsequent attempts detected the original 2.60 was still there, it would get no further through the process)

My issue turned out to be a problem with water ingress and internal corrosion of the charging/interface contacts - I think the battery was still good as it had been charging and holding that charge fine WHEN a connection was made).
(on opening unit myself - see http://www.fixya.com/support/t486586-will_not_power_up_out_cradle)

If careful, give it a go yourself...but be aware that this would invalidate your warranty (if its still running) - a significant concern is the apparent frequency of these problems just after the warranty expires!!!). Not sure if Garmin would still repair your unit/replace the battery after warranty, so may be worth contacting to find out...best of luck with THAT!!!

Going throught the net there seems to be a lot of these kind of errors with garmin, not only the 305 but other models. i got this mail from the tech support.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The GDX_FITNESSXFERTHREAD.CPP error can occur while trying to transfer data to the Training Center or from it to the Forerunner or Edge units. I would suggest updating the version of both the unit being used and the Training Center , to make sure that both are at the most current versions. Before updating the unit software you might want to download the data to Motion Based if the data is important to you. Updating the unit software may erase the stored data on the unit, you will not be able to transfer the data from Motion Based to the Training Center , but at least the data will not be lost. I would suggest updating the version of Training Center first to see if that corrects the problem first. Motion Based if you do not have an account is www.motionbased.com you will also need to create a myGarmin account if you have not already done so. You can go to www.garmin.com and click on the link for myGarmin, and then click on create new account.

    Here are the links:

    Forerunner 305: http://www.garmin.com/support/collection...

You can also try to delete the laps one at a time from the unit, and after each lap has been deleted try to once again transfer the data until you are successful. This will allow you to find the problem lap without having to delete the entire history on the unit. This way you can save some of the recorded information on the unit.

Now that you have deleted the lap or workout causing the problem and have been able to transfer the data to Training Center , you should not have to worry about this problem occurring again.

    Original Message Follows: ------------------------

    Hi,
i bought a forerunner last year off the internet. in the past month or two when i have gone to use it it wouldn't power up out of the cradle. when i put it into the cradle it seems to have trouble connecting to the computer. when it does connect it gives a message saying that it is having trouble connecting. i have tried leaving it to give it a good charge. this time i tried to power it up when it is in the cradle an it does power up but it gave a message saying to copy the message and send it to you.
do you have any suggestions on what to do? does the garmin program need to be reinstalled?
