Question about Wireless Access Points

Can i extend my wireless connections?

I have a compaq presario V6101US laptop and I have been fortunate to pick up my neighbors connection but I recently moved and I only get one connection that I can get on to, but some days I can get on and some days I cannot. The other connections are secured and asks for a code. Someone said that I have to buy a wireless card where i will be able to get access anywhere but they said theres monthly fees and that they are expensive. I went to Best Buy and some chick told me that I can buy a router but they also have monthly fees?Im trying to avoid spending money right now so is there something else I can do to expand my wireless connections? If theres a way please let me know the cheapest way to help me because I start college in 5 days. Broke single mom needs your assistance, thank you

Re: can i extend my wireless connections?

Ask your college if they have WIFI access available. Most colleges offer free WiFi access on there campuses. Ask the IT department about this. You might have to buy an adapter for your computer but it would only be a one time thing. Hope this helps.

Have you first established the connection between the Router and the Extender?
If so, have you connected e.g. a laptop to the Extender?
So if your WLAN networks SSID is NETGEAR, the WLAN network of the Extender is NETGEAR_EXT and you have to connect the laptop to NETGEAR_EXT.
Then you have to open your favorit internet browser and have to type in, which I guess is a buildin Setup-Assistant.If this doesn't work, make sure, your laptop is configured, to get an ip address automatically via DHCP.

Just having the wireless router without connecting it to cable modem or DSL modem will not allow you to get onto the Internet. The wireless card in your computer/laptop will allow you to get onto the Internet at a free public WiFi hot spot location such as McDonalds, Star Bucks, at the airport.
Also the wireless card in your computer/laptop may allow you to connect into an unsecured wireless router from your neighbors, if their wireless router is within range of your computer/laptop but without their permission to use their Internet, it is considered stealing from your neighbor. They have a set download limit from their Internet Service Provider and by you connecting to their ISP you may cause them to exceed their download limit and they would be charged additional costs for every Mega byte over their limit.

A Belkin router doesn't usually force the utilities page on you. I would advise checking your start page - you might have set it to your router's homepage by accident.

How to block neighbor's laptop from picking up my router signal and SSID?

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

Hello! My laptop is not able to connect to my Linksys router.

Make sure that your wireless is not secure or you are entering the right password. Also check to see what channel that your wireless is set on and compare that to your neighbors around you. If you and your neighbor have the same channel number set that is your problem. Your neighbor is over powering your own router.

Secure wireless connection with WEP but still picks up all wireless connections

If the unit has WAP as an option, use that instead of WEP. If enabling this still does not prompt you for a key, or you don't have this option, check here to make sure you have configured it properly...

If that doesn't help, check this firmware page and upgrade...

Hope this helps! : )
