You most likely have a corruption issue but sometimes it is a bad drive causing the corruption.
Get a windows XP disk and start up in Recovery.
Make sure that the system is set to boot from CD. You can do this in the BIOS or on some systems you can do this from the Boot up screen (you will see a function key for boot device selection)
When you get to the Setup Welcome Screen press R for recovery console.
1. chkdsk /r ENTER (dont forget space /r and it takes some time to finish. Just be patiient)
2. chkdsk /p ENTER
3. fixboot c: ENTER (where C is the boot Hard disk).
If this doesn't work and a repair or fresh install does not help then you will need to replace the Hard Drive.
Hope you get it back up withought losing any data.
Another option is to remove the hard drive, get a converter and hook it to another machine, pull data then run your repair after that.

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up. Boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Almost always, your describe problem would indicate hard drive problem. This could either be:

• corrupted files (least likely);
• some bad sectors (likely);
• faulty hard drive (most likely).

To check / verify, remove the hard drive, connect to an IDE / SATA to USB adapter and perform drive utilities on a 2nd computer.

Alternately, you could try formatting and reinstalling the Operating System. This of course would delete all the contents of the hard drive.
