I am having trouble listening to some songs that I have brought and downloaded from iTunes.
My current laptop is a Toshiba running Windows Vista Home Premium.
iTunes down loads the song into my iTunes library, however sometimes, and particularly if I have purchased an album I am not receiving/or can't locate some of the ''m4a'' files associated with some songs.
When I click on the song to play it, nothing happens. If I right click on the song and select ''show song in Windows Explorer'', I am directed to that area.
Sometimes the missing ''m4a'' files can be found there, and it is a simple matter of ''drag and drop'' the missing ''m4a'' into my iTunes Library and the song will then play.
However on other occasions their is no ''m4a'' file, only a file detailing the name of the song. Drag and dropping this file into my iTunes Library has no effect, I can't play the song.
Any help with this would be most appreciated.
Regards
Mark

- Thanks for your reply Randy,
Your right iTunes downloads your songs automatically to your iTunes Library, but beneath all that user friendly iTunes interface it has to save the song as a "m4a" file on your Hard Drive. For info, a Ring tone is a "m4r" file. At least that is the case with a Windows Vista PC, not sure of the procedure on a Apple.
In my case when I down load a song from iTunes it saves it to the iTunes Library (well most times) and the actual music file (m4a) is saved to; Desktop/mark/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/ Music/Artist/Album/ m4a file.
All songs that are in your iTunes Library are located in the above "file path". There is a "Compilations Folder" located in the Artist Folder
The above "file path" would apply to all Windows PC's I think. A quick way to find your "m4a" file for a particular song/track/album is when in your iTunes Library "right click" on the song, this opens a window in iTunes where there are a multitude of options are available. If you select "show in Windows Explorer" you end up at the "m4a" file for the particular song or songs in the album.
In my particular case, if everything has functioned as it should I "left click" on my song in iTunes and it plays (happy days). However, of late when I buy and download a track from iTunes one of three different things happen;
1. The song has down loaded as it should and I can play the track as it is intended by Apple/iTunes.
2. I "left click" on the song, and nothing happens. What I need to do then is what I have described above (right click on the song/show in Windows Explorer etc), if I am lucky when the song folder opens, the "m4a" file will be there, there will also be another file as well which I have called a "song file" it does not seem to serve much purpose as I have deleted it with no adverse repercussions. Anyway, all I do after locating the "m4a" file is drag and drop it into the iTunes Library, and the song then plays as it should, and I experienced no further problems. This is a "one time' fix :-).
3. Where it all turns nasty is that after having done the above (para 2), and opened the song folder, there is no "m4a" file just the "song file" which to my knowledge has no use. Therefore I can't drag and drop the "m4a" file into the iTunes Library. So even though the song appears in the iTunes Library it won't play...The Case of the Missing m4a File...
Incidentally, you can play all your iTunes Library music from from the above file path, and "by-pass" iTunes altogether. Why you would want to do this ???, just an option...
Cheers

- Thanks for the second repy Randy, for some reason I can't locate your second responce on the site via my laptop but am able to read it on my iPhone???
Anyway, I had/have the boxes you mentioned checked Preferences/Advanced/Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised etc.
My files appear in the two places you mention (Libary and Purchased), in addition to the iTunes Media Folder on my hard drive.
As for the connection dropping out. I don't think that was the case, but may have been so. I am of the understanding that iTunes would download any missing files the next time you logged in?
If I visit the iTunes Store and attempt to purchase the songs a second time iTunes warns me that I have already purchased and downloaded the songs.
It's a curly one, most probably something very simple, can't see the forest for all the tree's. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on.
Regards
