Acer 5100 laptop mouse/keyboard not working

I think the hard disk is failing, but I can't figure out how to transfer my files before it fails completely because the keyboard and mouse are not functional. Any ideas?

Re: Acer 5100 laptop mouse/keyboard not working

Your local electronics store has a USB keyboard and mouse port dongle. Or if you have a USB keyboard or mouse. Once you get functionality, choose Start>Run and type in "CMD" without quotes and hit enter. You will get a black box with a command line, enter:

chkdsk /r

Windows will inform your the disk is in use and cannot perform, you choose yes and it will do so upon the next restart. Restart the machine and let it run the disk check utility. Place your ear on the palmrests (usually where hard drive is located inside bottom half of laptop). Listen for sudden hard clicks, similar to huccups. When it makes those noises the hard drive light usually stays solid, afterwards the hard drive will repeat the same "bad sector check" sound. Finally, if you notice the process taking more than a few hours, your disk is in trouble. Recover the data using an external drive bay (also at electronics store) and place the drive inside the bay and recoverit to another computer. Order a new hard drive, intall, and re transfer your files by any media or network.

A few months ago my acer aspire 5100, all 3 usb ports stopped working. Now my computer does not even start. I have tried switching it on... somtimes the speaker makes scratchy noises otherwise no such...

It does sound like a complete motherboard failure, do you have a recovery disc for the laptop? remove the hard drive and leave it out, remove one stick of ram, remove the main battery, and remove the wireless card. Now fire up the computer to see if the acer logo comes up and then it should go to blank screen with the cursor blinking, if it works to this point, turn off computer. Now install the hard drive and load the recovery disc, make sure the boot sequence is set to start the dvd driver first, if everything works and you have full control we are starting to get somewhere, if it fails, this is where I would change the hard drive and see if that makes the difference, if it does, replace the ram and wireless card back into position, and last the main battery. If all this fails it leaves the motherboard as the problem. one thing I forgot to mention swap out the ram if windows freezes.

When I turn on the Acer 5100 the screen comes on and the programs run but there is NO keyboard , touchpad, or mouse response. So I can't do anything.

Very bad reputated problem on ACER laptops... The southbridge chip is failing or badly welded on the motherboard.. Need to replace the motherboard (or to find a NASA's technician being OK for reparing the CMS welding...)

On an Acer, the Fn key plus F7 will turn the touchpad on and off.
Try that to see if it works.

Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook Boots to Windows, but nothing works. No keyboard, no mouse, no usb or CD, no external monitor. I have an Aspire 5100 Acer Laptop that has no keyboard or mouse function period...

Try booting your computer from CD ROM with the OS CD/DVD already inserted and when prompted just try repair. If that does not work re-install the same on the same 'partition' assuming it to be C by deleting the the windows system files only. While doing so keep the internet on and immediately after the basic version of the OS is installed and the m/c boots-up for the first time, go to the official website and download the latest drivers for every component like toch-pad, keypad, display, audio, etc.(i.e. almost all the drivers)

Non responsive laptop

Try removing the memory/RAM. and if it has 2 sticks try just 1 in alternate slots.
Failing this the CPU may have overheated. Without CPU Function. No Processing is acheived.

Keyboard & mouse are dead

I just fixed this problem by doing the following:

Hard power-off (hold the power button until the laptop turns off)
Unplug the AC adaptor
Remove the battery
Plug in the AC adaptor
Hold ctrl and turn the power on. You should arrive at a black screen.
Hard power-off again, then turn the power on.

Acer Aspire 3000 keyboard failing

The problem is the battery as mentioned before. Disabling "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Battery Method" should solve the problem of the keybord and the mouse, this is, because the driver dosen't work properly with a bad battery. I think it fires a lot of hard interruptions that are blocking the keybord and the mouse interruption to the system (each time a key is pressed an interruption is send to the processor... if the battery driver sends a lot of interruptions, the key interruptions don't have time to be processed in time - that explains the fact that the system responds to a key press is that bad)
