I have a 1550 Cub Cadet Riding lawn Mower which has not been used for a couple of months. I tried to use it to mow today and when I pulled out the PTO knob to start mowing the engine stopped. Also in the Systems Indicator Monitor/Hour Meter console there is a letter M underlined flashing that is a code for something but I do not know what. It is to the left of the Hour Meter.

It sounds like either a critter has crawled around the unit and used it for sharpening its fangs or you had a safty switch go bad, Most newer tractors have switches on the seat and elsewhere on the tractor to make sure the mower will not start unless all safty is followed this includes sitting in the seat, and clutch pushed it or brake held on.
