Question about Philips Magnavox 9P6034C 60" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Magnavox tv my projection tv will work fine for a few minutes and the the screen becomes a trapezoid. the sides distort and get a sort of rainbow effect. the very center of the picture is the only thing uneffected. any words on the sides are sort of overlaid. at the same time the picture is sort of stretched.

The picture will work perfectly for a while then messes up. At other times it is right when I turn the tv on. Last night after a couple of hours it straitened up and worked fine until I turned it off. When it first started doing it, you could hit the side of the tv of stomp the floor and it would right itself. Will degaussing the screen help?

no.. there is a loose contact.. it may require some soldering.. i think that is a capacitor that is getting a bit on the loose, be careful when touching the crt.. otherwise you could get electrocuted.. even if its unplugged...
you could still take the risk of doing it yourself.. but its better let someone with experience does this..

I have a 52 inch magnavox with rainbow colored distortion on the screen

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

I have a 46" magnavox projection screen tv that has the red, blue, green colors on the left side of the screen when first turned on. After a few minutes of being on, the screen resumes to normal colors. ...

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

if this is a distorted kind of rainbow aura affecting the colour, you need to de-gauss the screen - a good tv repair man will have the mains powered magnet to fix this - and shouldn't charge alot.
