hitting Return just brings the carriage back to the start of the same line and doesn't insert a line break on a smith-corona

Assuming this is a mechanical machine with elect5ric motor:
Verify the line space selector is not set on 0. (just inside LH platen knob)
Check that the LH platen knob does no have a push lever sticking out to the left.
Try placing a few drops of oil at the left portion of the platen, just left of the metal teeth (the linespace pawl may be jammed and not restoring to rest position)
