Question about Optics

1 Answer

Telescope doesn't seem to work

I have a Meade ETX-90EC. Looking through it I see nothing. There is a silver colered nob that I believe is supposed to flip a mirror or prism in position but it does nothing. Any advice will be most appreciated.

I guess I did not make myself clear, the flip miorror does not work although the the silver knob turns. Can I take this apart and fix it or new parts needed? Should I send to someone to fix. The latter is a tad difficult since I live in rural area.

I can not find your site or address and would like to send the scope to you.

This issue will be extremely hard to diagnose over the net but I'll give it a try. This is from Meade. The link to the online manual is below: http://www.meade.com/manuals/etx90ec/index.html Unable to see an image through the eyepiece:

  • Confirm that the lens cover has been removed from the telescope.
  • Confirm that the flip-mirror control (16, Fig. 1) is in the "up" position if using the eyepiece holder (4, Fig. 1) so that light is directed to the eyepiece (1, Fig. 1). Confirm that the flip-mirror control is in the "down" position if using the #932 Erecting Prism or doing photography with the ETX-90EC (see Telescope Controls and PHOTOGRAPHY WITH THE ETX-90EC).
It sounds like you are correct about a mechanical issue with the knob that moves the mirror. If you need a quick fix try your local camera repair or watch repair shop as the are familiar with intricate parts. The camera shop would be preferable as they know optics. Otherwise you could ship it to me and I could repair it fro you depending on the availibility of parts if parts were needed. Check my picture for my site address and get contact info there for more information.

You could take it apart and try to repair yourself if you have some mechanical aptitude.

I would be happy to look at it for you. If the unit can be repaired without having to order parts I can do it. If it needs parts the repair will depend on the availibility of replacement parts. My web address is www.brianbell.net and my email is bkbell@brianbell.net. If you could email me your approximate location it would be helpful. Maybe I could find a solution closer to you. My address is on the contact us page on my site. You can also see my qualifications and references on my siteThanks.

I have a Meade ETX-90/ec telescope, the verticle lock knob will not thighten. It appears to be stripped. how can I fix it? Where can I get a parts list? Thank you

The bolt is stripped away from the plastic knob-- TAKE THE vertical lock knob off and inspect the bolt head-- you can use a STRONG glue to fix it -- epoxy or something similar.

ETX 60 altitude doesn´t work, but motor works

You need to tighten the friction lock - it acts as a slip clutch.

Optical mirror detached - Meade ETX-90EC Telescope

Your best bet is to ship it back to Meade for repair. they may not look it but there are very close tolerances that have to be achieved and takes certain tools for alignment.
