If you want to lock your router so that nobody can use it, you need to lock it using a WEP or WAP key. First of all you need to go to the router page. To do this, click on start>run and type cmd. It will take you to MS DOS window. Type ipconfig and hit enter. Now look for default gateway. It will say 192. something. Note the address. Now open an Internet Explorer window and type the default gateway address. This will open up the router page It may ask you for username and password. Normally the usernames are admin, administrator and the passwords are admin, administrator, password or it might be left blank. Try this and if you are able to get to the router page, you can change the settings and use WEP or WAP keys and choose your password.

Stability and reliability are also critical
We use a comcast cable modem
Must support mixed environment - 2 Macs connecting wirelessly, 2 PCs (1 with a wired connection)
We all want to be able to share a printer (which will connect to router with a wired connection)
Network attached storage, media streaming - I'm not worried about these now, looking for basic connectivity. Though would be great if I could grow into this in the future...
