Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Goodman furnace I first watched the ignition process the ignitor started to glow gas valve opened then the gas cooled the element instead of ignition. I thought perhaps ignition placement was off so I adjusted and tried to fire again. this time I must have had the element touching the metal frame and the ignition sparked, Exploded into 3 fragments. I replaced the hot surface ignitor and cannot get it to glow. Turn on unit and blower starts. I here a click...then second click and gas flows through the manifold but ignitor is not glowing. 3 times the same and lockout.

Took your advice and replaced the 3 amp fuse. Fixed it! But what could cause the blown fuse. Goodman heater only 1 year old. Is this a typical issue or could there be another reason causing fuse to blow?

I've a Flavel Diamond HE gas fire that is less than 2 months old. This weekend the remote failed to workit so I replaced the battery. This still did not work so I replaced the batteries for the sensor. Once I had done this a repeated beep started and the only way I can stop it is by removing the batteries to the ignition sensor thus rendering the fire unuseable. I should appreciate your assistance.

Check the roll out switch(s) and the lock out switches. They are a small disc looking about the size of a nickle, with with 2 wires attached on them. There will be a re-set button in the middle that resembles a small peg. Push this in to re-set. As the glow coil shorted out, the fuse on the control board may have blown. On the newer furnaces find the main board and look for a car type fuse. If blown, replace. You also have the symptoms of a bad limit switch, by the clicking noise (the heat fan relay) and the blower fan running instantlly.

Goodman furnace Model GDS80703AXBB -fan comes on then igniter light comes on, then burners turn on but shut off right away and wont stay lit. Now igniter light wont come on so burners not coming on at...

Sounds like either the flame sensor is not working.
The sequence for starting the furnace is:
1. extraction fan on
2. pressure sensor (for fan)
3. ignitor (spark or glow plug) comes on
4. gas valve opens up
5. ignition of flame
6. flame sensor (or temperature sensor)
7. plenum temp. sensor
8. main fan starts
It is most likely that the flame sensor is dirty or gone,
or (and I hope not), the module is gone and needs to
be replaced.

I have a goodman furnace with a solid red light. Says normal operation, but ignitor does not light. Unplugged ignitor and still solid light. Could it be the circuit board or something else? Blower

Usually you can visually inspect the igniter, looking for any cracks or breaks in the element. The best way to check it is with a volt meter to see if your getting the 120v to the plug itself, putting your leads in each of the prongs on the plug. If you are not getting the voltage, it's usually the board. Make sure all connections are tight. The heating sequence will be: 1. Inducer motor starts 2. You will hear a click from the board, it telling the igniter to light. It should start to glow. 3. Next click will be the gas valve opening and flames on. 4. Blower motor starts. Hope this helps!

Tempstar pilot turns off

Based on your model number this furnace does not have a pilot light, instead it uses a hot surface igniter.typically it glows and when it gets hot enough the gas valve will open and the burners will light. When the igniter starts to go bad it will glow but not get hot enough to open the gas valve. If your furnace lights and the quickly goes out the flame sensor maybe dirty.

For some reason the heater does not generate heat. the fan works but no heat. Any Ideas?

I've got an easy way for you to check, and then we can help you from there.
First pop open both lids to your furnace (this may require a screwdriver). Turn up your thermostat, push the safety interlock button in if it has one (it's a button that turns off the power when the doors are removed), and watch.

On most modern furnaces (past 20-25 years) you'll hear/see:
1. Inducer fan
2. orange glow (ignitor)
3. Gas valve opening and ignition (flames)
4. Main Fan.

that's normal heater operation.
The most common issue here is a burned out ignitor, in which case you wouldn't see the orange glow but the sequence would attempt to continue anyway (the gas valve will open and hiss gas, but it won't lite, then it'll give up and try again a few minutes later).

On older furnaces there's a pilot light to start with, the click of the gas valve and boom... ignition.

On new furnaces it's
Inducer fan
gas valve opening
spark - ignition
Main fan.

and there are some oddballs in between, particularly the Lennox Pulse. If that's your furnace just back away slowly and call a professional... some guys won't even touch those, so be sure to mention what it is... if you call a pro.

So go ahead and watch it run, then tell me/us what you see.

Ten yr old Goodman residential furnace won't light even though hot surface ignitor glows red for 1 or 2 seconds.

Make sure you have gas on. Tap on the valve as the ignitor glows. The valve may just be stuck. If not- I'm thinking the funace needs a new ignition module.

Goodman GMP075-3 ignition problem

OK, if the furnace is not lighting for even a few seconds, you have either a bad gas valve, bad wire, bad control module or no gas. The pressure switch is not the issue. Check all wires to the gas valve and look for 24 volts across them when the ignitor glows and you hear the click. Then test for 24 volts to ground. It could be a bad ground wire.
