HP Media Center M7000 desktop powers dow...

I have a HP Media Center M7000 desktop. I power it on and after about 8 seconds it powers off. I removed all cards, disconnected the CPU fan, removed memory simms to no avail. I disconnected the hard drive and it made no difference. I removed the P7 (12 volt) connector and it stays up (not doing much of course) and I measured the voltage on the P7 and it's 11.83 on both so that's within spec. Any ideas what to do next other than replace the motherboard? What could be shorting out the motherboard so the whole thing powers down?

- When I pulled the P7 connector, I tested both leads to see if power was bad. It was a steady 11.83 volts out of each of the two yellow leads. How can it be the power supply?

- I changed the power supply and it made no difference. It powers up for about 8 seconds and then shuts down. Someone had recommended removing the battery for the bios to clear that. I did that as well. Nothing much left except the motherboard/CPU. Am I better off just chucking the whole piece of crap and buying a new one? How difficult is it to replace the CPU/Motherboard?

- Tim, I tried a different power supply but it did the same thing. I removed the motherboard. When the 12V was plugged in and I applied power, the CPU fan barely moves and the supply shuts down. I removed the CPU from the socket and powered the MB up with the 12V applied and the CPU fan runs quickly and the unit stays up. So now I either have a bad socket for the CPU or a bad CPU. Any way to determine if I have a bad CPU chip before buying a new one?

before changing the motherboard just try to connect every thing without the case and then reset the bois then if the problem is still then it is the motherboard but befor you do this just it ia a crazy thing but will make all the terminals ground put the motherboard on the wall and make sure all the terminals is connected to the wall
