Hi sm3ch3ri3,

Take a look at this page, it has all the information on the motherboard and a download link for the manual. In the manual you will find the information on the memory speeds and types you can use with this motherboard.

It might be worth looking at the BIOS setting section so that you can get your processor running at full speed. Also you may need to update the BIOS in oder to get the processor running at full speed.

Regards,

How to upgrade processor on ASUS A7A266 motherboard?

looking at this old motherboard the 2400 is unlikely to work, the motherboard has a cpu fsb support of 133mhz and supports the duron processors.

offhand, 2400 wont work.

Processor speed loss

It's possible that the XP is using the extra resource or processor usage, and there isn't anything that you can do. However, It's also possible that this machine was configurated for 2000, and that it just needs drivers for XP. You can start by going to IBM's support site and doing a bios flash to the most recent bios, and checking for a chip set driver update, patch, or for for XP. Also check for any processor speed stepping drivers or updated drivers. Try this and let me know.

AMD Athon XP 2600 dropped speed

Some times when a computer shuts down unexspectedly like that it will reset itself back to its defaults in bios thinking there was a problem. Go in there and check your cpu settings. The fsb should be set to 266 mhz. Make sure it didnt default back to 133 mhz.

And FYI the 2600 is acutally a 2.13 gig cpu not a 2.6 gig..

RAM not running at full speed

Go to page 33 in your manual, see DRAM Clock/Drive Control & press enter. You can tweak your memory to run faster however your manual suggest not too. Hate to see you burn it up. As you will see everything is set to Auto:
Max Memclock (Mhz) [Auto]
1T/2T Memory Timing [Auto]
CAS# latency (Tcl) [Auto]
When DDR Timing Setting by is set to Manual, use this item to set the DRAM frequency. Would be nice to have a side panel fan blowing on your memory.

Unless you can upgrade your bios chip, you can only go to
(Socket 462) AMD® Athlon/Athlon XP/Duron processor up to 2000+MHz.
If you upgrade your bios to version 1.1
You can run the XP 2200+ , Socket A.

PROCESSOR

Your M/B support Socket 462 (also called Socket A) is a PGA socket designed for AMD K7 family of processors. This socket can be used with AMD Athlon and Duron processors ranging in speed from 600 MHz to 2200 MHz (3200+) and with bus frequences ranging from 100 MHz to 200 MHz (400 MHz DDR)

Athlon (Socket A) (600 MHz - 1400 MHz)
Athlon XP (1333 MHz - 2333 MHz, or 1500+ - 3200+)
Athlon MP (1000 MHz - 2133 MHz)
Duron (550 MHz - 1800 MHz)
Sempron (socket A) (1500 MHz - 2200 MHz, or 2200+ - 3300+)
Mobile Athlon 4 (850 MHz - 1400 MHz)
Mobile Athlon XP-M (Socket A) (1200 MHz - 2200 MHz, or 1400+ - 3000+)
Mobile Duron (650 MHz - 1200 MHz)

I Recommend to go for Athlon XP with good cooling fan. :)
