this has become pretty bad lately. i get on my friend's xbox and recover my gamertag on his system so i can play on my name online at his house. then i come home and try to recover my gamertag on my own system and almost every day i get the same repeated problems that xbox live signup is currently unavailable. i hope they can find a resolution sometime soon because it takes forever and i cant even get online for hours at a time.

It's not the wireless connection.  Mine's wired because I didn't feel like shelling out a bill for the adapter, and I have the same problem.

Has anyone thought that it could maybe be that the problem is the wireless network adapter, because my friend hooked his up wired with no problem...

Yo, guys i just got word that anyone with a xbox live account is to be getting a free game soon in Arcade. Im just speculating here, but this could be a reason. Im thinking that Microsoft had possibly cut the sign up portion of xbox live until the release of this arcade game, also due to the high volume of people signing up because of hearing about this could be another reason. I just fixed my xbox and this is how they reward us...
Good luck guys, also try resetting your router and right when you get connection sign in, worked for me but i had to reformat my drive again. PEACE

Download your Xbox Live profile
You might want to download your Xbox Live gamer profile in the following situations:
  • You want to use your Xbox Live gamertag on another console.
  • You have a Zune, Games for Windows, or Windows 8 Microsoft account (download your existing account instead of creating a new account).
  • You accidentally deleted your Xbox Live gamertag from your console.
You can download your Xbox Live gamertag to any console. Here's how:
  1. Press the Xbox Guide button on your controller (large X button in the center of your controller).
  2. Select Download Profile.
  3. Note Not seeing Download Profile? Press X to sign out of your profile.
  4. Enter the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox Live gamertag. If you don't know your Microsoft account or password, see Find your Microsoft account or password.Note "Microsoft account" is the new name for what used to be called "Windows Live ID." It's the email address and password you use to sign in to Microsoft services (including Xbox Live). Find out more.
  5. Now, enter your Microsoft account password.Note If your account is an Xbox Live child account, the parent's Microsoft account information is required to download the profile.
  6. Select the storage device for your profile (for example, Hard Drive).
  7. Your profile will begin downloading. Once your profile is downloaded, you can choose whether or not you want to require your Microsoft account password to sign into your profile.

The majority of people don't use unique passwords for everything they sign up for. Try out any passwords you can remember using for anything and see if they work.

You sign into your Gamertag using the linked Windows Live account. If you can't remember the password, you could always try resetting it. To reset the password for your Windows Live account (and by extension, your Gamertag password) you should go through the password reset process on a Windows Live website (such as Hotmail), found here.

                    Hope this was helpful!

I accidently deleted my gamertag that has Xbox Live and my saved achievements in it and I don't know how to get it back

To recover your Gamertag from Xbox LIVE:
                    1. Sign out from all of your profiles. The fastest way to do this is to press the Xbox Guide button, press X, and select Yes, sign out.
                    2. Select Recover Gamertag.
                    3. Follow the directions on the screen. NoteYou can enter information using a USB keyboard plugged into a controller port, the Xbox 360 Chatpad (sold as part of the Xbox 360 Messenger Kit), or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.
                    4. When you're finished, your profile will be downloaded from Xbox LIVE to your console and you'll see your avatar in the Sign In area. You're good to go! NoteIf you're a minor, you'll be asked to supply Windows Live ID credentials for your parent, who will need to be present to complete the procedure. Your parent will need his or her own Windows Live ID and a valid e-mail address.
