hi, i have a 1984 fisher studio standard cd player. when it plays, it sounds excellent and works fine. the machine will play cdr's as well as normal cds. however, some cds it simply will not spin. it clicks three times slowly, and then does nothing. i figured out a trick that works 100% of the time: tilting the entire machine at a 45 degree angle will get the disk to spin, i can then return the machine to its normal, level position and it plays fine.
there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the disks it will and won't play. in fact, when i was comparing the sound quality of this cd player to a newer dvd/cd player (no difference in sound quality by the way) i was using two identical cds, and yet the fisher would only play one of them. interestingly as well, once the fisher starts playing, it deals with bad cds quite well and does not skip. it's just an issue of getting it started. i opened the machine in the hope of finding one 'pot' that i could turn up, but instead found 6 adjustable metal squares. i fiddled with them, but it made no difference, and i returned them to the original position. i also cleaned the laser while i was in there, which made no difference.
There are a number of causes of this problem. Can you post the model number please? I suspect that the spindle motor is tired and can not get the CD up to speed fast enough. There were a number of very common failures for FIsher units, but they varied based upon the model. If you can update this with the model, I can get you more details.
Thanks for the informative write-up. So few know how to describe a problem (example: it's broke) or have the intuition to check a few things out.
A surviving 1984 CD player? Good for you. And they originally said the lasers would burn out in a few years.
Don't read too much into sound quality and tracking of defects for this problem. It sounds like a load status sensing problem. Does it make the thee clicks when you load no disk or one upside down (to simulate a bad disk)?
You're probably on the right track with the tilt. I suspect you need to locate the sensor that 'sees' the presence of the disk in the first place. Can you try your troubleshooting with the covers off and observe what may be different at the tilted angle?
