cd rom will not read. have just put windows 98 on instead of xp, hard disc was formated, have win 98 now, but cd wont work or if i plug in usb memory stick

With Windows 98 you MUST install a suitable driver in addition to Windows 98 to talk to CD Roms. I believe there is also a general service routine that must be loaded.
XP has all this functionality built in.
