The likely hood is that someone has turned off auto answer check the manual how to change this the other option if it always did auto automatically then turn the machine off at the wall socket and then turn back on this will boot back how it was. (try this first) If it doesn't work then check that the auto answer is switched on.

If none of the above work then it will be the modem that is not picking up the line and will need to be replaced.
