- Thanks, drain plug is tight. I do hear some hissing but not from that area. It was running fine, I heard a pop and lost pressure and now the tank doesn't fill. Seems like perhaps a hose or connection in the housing came off. Can't seem to figure out how to get the plastic cowling off. Thanks again.Nov 07, 2009

Do you hear hissing anywhere? If so there's you problem (possible the drain on the tank bottom?)
Otherwise your piston is likely worn.
I don;t know what you're using this for.
For the average Joe there are a number of high-quality low-cost compressors out there for <$100 (harbor freight).
Look for a high HP/GAL ration 2hp - 5gal is ideal. Pancake compressors are nice and portable but lack the volume for higher-demand air tools.
I prefer cast-iron 'oil' ones for longevity.

If you do not hear the air escaping from a joint, then perhaps the piston is broken. You'll have to disassemble it and examine the compressor components
