Question about Nikon Speedlight SB-800 TTL Flash

1 Answer

Sb-800 Nikon Hello, I shoot weddings and events and I have an sb-800 that I dropped and the built in Accessories broke. The flash is working but it seems to loose power a bit faster than my other unit. I can shoot for several hours with my other unit but the one I droped will only last about 30 min. before the images start being under exposed. Can it be fixed or do I need to replace it. On my other one, the locking arm that you use to lock the unit onto the hot shoe is going past the point that it should and will not stay locked. It has almost fallen off my camera twice. Any suggestions would be great.

Are the sb-900 and the sb-800 heads the same? I have a sb-800 and I want to buy teh coco ring flash with the sb-900 adapter, are both the same, will it fit the sb-800?

No it is not the same. the SB 900 is 25% bigger.
I just got a Coco ring for my SB 800 (I bougth the one for the SB 900) and it is big. But I just filled the empty space with hard foam and works wonders. I can post a photo if you want.
By the way I have a D 700. It migth fit different in other cameras.

I am using a nikon D200 with a sb800. The flash is firing ok on TTL and the camera is set on 'P' however I am getting a dark picture every tme. The built in flash works OK It appears the flash/camera...

This is an excellent flash, very powerful and compact and actually more flash then what was available when the D200 first cam on the market. The two will work nicely together and I think the problem is that the SB-800 can be programmed within itself. This meaning with some cameras you program the camera for the flash output with the SB-800 you can program the flash as well. It has some excellent features like Flash value lock (which I think is set to slightly underexpose from what your question is asking) it also has Flash color information and a built in Flash compensation. Possibly the compensation or value lock are set to underexposure. I'm saying this over the camera setting because you stated that the internal flash appeared to be okay, check your SB-800 settings

I dropped my camera now the flash is broken,

Sure. Nikon makes a line of what they call Speedlights. The SB-400, SB-600, SB-800, and SB-900 will give you full capabilities. Older models will give you somewhat less capabilities.

Third-party vendors also make flash units compatible with the D60.

External flash units tend to be more powerful than built-in flashes, which makes sense considering their size and additional batteries. They also move the light source further from the lens axis, reducing red-eye, improving shadows, etc. They also may allow bounce flash, which further softens the light.

My SB-600 Just quit firing... :(

It maybe because it overheated he flash tube, nikon flash guns use a thermal cutout, to prevent overheating, usually after approximately 30 / 40 shots, in quick succession.  It should start working again after it cools down.
If not you may need to get it checked at Nikon Service Centre. Cheers Ian

Sb 800 and sb900 overexposing

It might be you are not making a good contact on your camera and flash .

Are you using a cord to get the flash off the camera . If so the cord could be intermittent .
