You should see all your pictures on preview mode. To turn on your screen, go to settings and change the screen to 'on' or the after-shot-preview time to anything else than '0' or 'off'. Having the screen off gives you longer battery life though.
Sounds like you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off to save batterie (you would then use the optical viewfinder in its place). Press this button once to see if it corrects the problem.
If the above didn't help, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

I can turn my sd1000 on, the flash works, everything works. The only thing is that I can't see what's going on through the lcd, but when I take a picture the picture does come up. The funny thing is that if I'm recording a video, I can see what's going on in the lcd. It's only not working during picture taking. Everything else works, it plays back and everything.

the flash goes off once, then it just won't work again. all the pics are over exposed when any light source is around. it's like the camera now picks up the slightest amount of light, but can't flash. Yes, it has been dropped a few times. New battery does nothing. It takes a day to recover to give me one good flash. Help - Christmas with two toddlers coming up fast and no camera!

When I try to take a picture with the flash on the camera will not take the picture. The orange light comes on but it never takes the picture. The camera will take pictures with the flash off but of course the pictures are out of focus. Is there anything I can do to fix my camera?
