Sony NWZ-A816 won't charge

I have a Sony Walkman NWZ-A816. Out of the box it charged and I was able to fill it with music. While using it it crashed and would not reset. I ran the battery down and now it won't charge. I can't get any USB to even recognize the it when it's plugged into the port. Please help.

We just got a brand-new Sony MP3 Player NWZ-A816 in black. Upon plugging it in into the USB ports (and we have tried all three), the computer doesn't even see the player. It doesn't charge, it doesn't open as a peripheral drive. We went back to the store and they tested it there, works fine. Works fine with our neighbor's computer. At the end of the tether. Reinstalled SP2 (we have XP Home Edition, by the way), tried to look for the way to update the USB drivers, unsuccessful, so far. My Blue Tooth adapter and jump-drive work just fine. Any help is appreciated.

I have the same problem. First connected the walkman to my PC, it saw it fine as a new driver WALKMAN. I then installed Windows XP SP2 so MediaManager would work and since then it won't recognise it on any USB port. Tried rebooting, resetting, etc. Like the other person, works OK on my husband's PC but not on the PC where all my songs are!

  • smokey mcT Mar 23, 2009

I am so pissed off. My walkman worked fine for about 8 months until sudenly out of the blue it was no longer recognized by the PC. It won't charge either. If I plug it in and I am stuck on the start screen where it prompts me to charge it, but it won't charge!!! So I am stuck with a good looking piece of plastic that SELF DESTRUCTED for no aparent reason. There seems to be no solution... I have tried all those that do not entail dissassembling it. I'm getting an ipod or something..

  • kwmsdl Apr 05, 2009

I had the same problem, and it's clear it's a Windows Vista problem, not a Sony NWZ-A816 problem (at least in my case it is clear: I have two of them, and the both stopped charging or being recognized by my computer after a series of Vista updates).

The post called "best solution" worked like a charm for me, although in Vista the term is "disable" and not "delete." Anyway, bith work prefectly now, thanks "recordnow" for posting the solution!

My computer did not recognize the player even after resetting. Here is what worked in my XP machine. Connected the player to the computer. Start - control panel - system - hardware - device manager - Universal serial bus contollers. The Walkman appeared with a yellow symbol. Right click on it and click delete. Take the player out. Reboot. Connect the player. Hopefully this will work for you.

I had the same problem. Battery ran down, screen frozen. I reset it using a pin. The reset button is located on the lower right hand side next to the metal loop used for a strap. reset is engraved right next to it. Once I did that it rebooted and works fine.

I went through this for the last six months, and I have xp and vista. In xp, it would work, drag and drop, but on vista, I kept getting the mtp device error code 10. I finally chose the usb option it gives under the update drivers, then choose choose drivers yourself, then choice will be USB mass storage I think I chose, then suddenly, my CONNECT came on! I am soooo happy, now after four months I can add songs!!!!

Whenever I would hook mine up via USB wall charger or a PC, it would just tell me LOW BATTERY please charge.
I figured it was a bad battery, but I had it connected to my PC right now and hit reset a bunch of times (It hadn't worked before) and suddenly it's starting to charge.

So if you've run out of patience try hitting your reset button a ton of times while mashing other buttons, it actually worked for me....

For all the new people reading this, its an easy fix. Get an old tooth brush and dip it in some white spirit, then thuroughly clean the connections between the MP3 player and USB cable.

Hey presto, fixed.

Thank you and good night.

Walkman not detected /won't charge

I had a similar problem that was caused by the casing becoming loose on the back of the Walkman which prevents the power cable from connecting properly. Tightening the screws on the back fixes this.

    Won't charge/connect to computer

I had the same problem because the casing at the back became lose and the power cable wouldn't connect properly -its not immediately obvious. Tightening the screws on the back fixed that problem

Plug the power/USB cable on your computer (or on a iPhone usb power adapter) and press/hold [play/pause] [home/back] [pwr off/option] buttons until the "os" finishes to load (progression bar). That's it. I hope it will work for you too.

My problem is that it doesn't seem to charge... it says it's connected, the image on the player is normal, I can access my files, but when I unplug it, the thing won't stay on, it turns off after a few seconds every time.
I'll try a wall charger later and see. Thank you everyone.

This player has been nothing but trouble, i have the nwz-a816 and it will only recharge if i hit reset. Now since it only shows up on any computer as an uknown device that is in-accessible, i think its safe to say i threw one hundred dollars out the window.... Junk, Lightweight, attractive looking-junk.

Hi, a wall charger (available at electronic stores) with the USB cable supplied with the walkman works well when you cannot charge it from the laptop.

I have a sony mp3 player NWZ-S615F. It is doing the same thing. It worked for about a month. Then I couldn't add songs. It would take a while for me to get it to charge the battery. Now it won't recognize it at all. I can't charge it. I have tried several times to reload the disc and have tried several ports on my computer to no avail.

My Sony NWZ-S639F fails to turn on. I pressed reset and it told me battery low and to recharge. I plugged in and the initial display came up . The blue line at the bottom of the display got three quarters of the way across the bottom and stopped and goes no further. Nothing happens from there. Reset and it does the same. HELP!!! Love the player but PLEASE COME BACK TO ME!!!!

Sony walkman nwz-a816 getting usb device not recognized

okay, try plugging it in. Go to Startmenu, right click 'My computer', and select properties. Go to the 'Hardware' tab, then Device manager. Down at the bottom, you should see a section of the tree that can be expanded, entitled 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' Find the Unknown device part. Select that, then go to 'Action','Uninstall'. After un-installation, the computer might restart. Unplug your walkman. When windows is back up, plug it in, and see if that works. if not, I have an alternative solution
