The first time I tried to restore the firmware in my Pearl it would not recognize it. I had to follow all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you run the software. Basically, try taking the battery out and waiting 10 seconds or so. Run the software and read all the instructions at the bottom of the popup window. then hold the play button, plug your player in, and keep holding that button until the software recognizes it. It works.
you should be able to install it.. ignore the rca digital media player bogus... it is the actual mp3 player.. here is the link to the most recent firmware upgrade aka software..
please let me know if this helped at all..
The only website that will have the Vista compatible software is the RCA website - I know the Pearl and other models are Vista-compat now, but I'm not 100% sure about the Lyra. Enter your model # into the RCA support site to find out.
First, make sure that your OS is compatible - if you have Vista, you must go to RCA's website and get a new version of the software.
If you have XP: Either the device is bad, the pc port is bad, or the software is faulty. Try connecting to different usb port, then a usb port on a different pc with a compatible os. If still not recognized, then there is physical damage to player.
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware. Wizard

Both the TH1100 and TH1101 require Windows 2000 (Service Pack 3), Windows XP (Service Pack 1 or higher) or Windows Vista. All of these OS's will recognize the players without you installing any drivers.
