Cathy, Two main reasons. One, the color ink cartridge empty and two, the settings for this printer are set to print only B&W. And I hope it is the second reason as you may have ensured that the colored cartridges are full. So, in the Control Panel->Printers->this printer and select its properties. There you will find the option to print in black or color or both. Select both.
