Access - reboot issues

I can not access router to make a secure network. It is only acting as a hub so I don't need a typical setup. I works fine not secured but I would like to change that. I feel I need to do a hard reboot. What is the correct technique?

Re: access - reboot issues

Typically you unplug the router and wait several seconds. Then, you hold in the reset button while reconnecting the power adapter. Continue holding the reset button for 10seconds and then release and connect it to your computer. Then proceed with configuration; if that doesn't work, repeat the steps but hold the button for 20seconds. I hope this helps.

How to change my password

Change Router Passwords

Network security has become a very real and important issue.
The ability for people to access sensitive hardware and information is a critical issue and all the measures that can reasonably be put in place to stop this act should be implemented.

One way to protect your network hardware is to change the password for access to your router from the factory default to one that is unique and private.
Read on to learn more.

Open your Internet browser, type the address of the router into the URL address bar, and open it. The address is typically in the form of 192.168.X.X.
This is the local network address.

Enter the account name and password to open the router setup utility.
Navigate through the setup utility until you find the screen that will let you change the password. You will need to enter the old password to change it.

Decide on a new password that has good security to a hacker.
The best password is more than 8 characters and uses both lower case and upper case letters and numbers.

Some will allow you to use special characters also.
Do not make the password anything that can be found in a dictionary or any date of significance.

Enter the old password in the change password page of the router.
When prompted then enter the new password.

You will be asked to enter it twice to confirm that the correct password is entered.
Immediately, record the new password in some secure location that you can find if you forget it.

Confirm the password change on the router page and log off the router.
To check the information and that the router has been setup correctly with the new password, open the router address in the browser again and login with the new information.

If you are able to login, you have successfully changed the password.

Wireless Network Reset and Setup - Linksys

If you are unable to connect your laptop wireless to your Linksys wireless access point/router, the easiest and fastest way to get going is to reset your router to the factory defaults. This will make your router work like the day you bought it.

There are 2 steps involved Reset your router, Setup/Secure a new router

Reset your router:

  • Unplug your DSL/Cable modem from power (not your access point/router) Leave this unplugged for now

  • On the rear of your Linksys router you will find a small RESET button
  • With the power still on the router, Press and hold (with a pin/pen tip) the RESET button for 30 seconds.
  • Release the RESET button a wait 15 seconds for the router to reboot

almost done....
  • Unplug your Linksys router from power
  • Plug your DSL/Cable modem back in to power
  • Wait 1 minute for the modem to boot up
  • Be sure the ethernet (cat5) cable from your modem is securely plugged into the WAN port on the back of your Linksys router. This is usually labeled WAN or Internet above the jack
  • Plug your Linksys router back into power.

You will now be able to connect to the internet with your wireless device. I would advise that you follow the next steps in securing your wireless network.

Setup/Secure a new router

Log into your router
  • Type into your web browser and hit enter
  • In the login fields (case sensitive):
  • Username: leave_this_field_blank
  • Password: admin
  • Click OK

Once in the web interface for your router
  • Click Wireless tab - Basic Wireless Settings
  • Find the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field
  • change this to your new network name (this is the name you will see when you connect through your wireless device)
  • Find the Wireless Channel field
  • Change this from 6 (default) to 1 or 11

  • Click on Wireless Security
  • Find the Security Mode field
  • Choose WPA2 - Personal
  • WPA Algorithm choose AES
  • WPA Shared Key type in your new password you will use to connect to your network

Click Save Changes and your router will now reboot. You will now need to enter in that same password (WPA Shared Key) when you first connect with your laptop to your wireless network

Where do I find the network security key for my router

If it has a SSID and Security Key that has been setup, the person that set it up would have the Security Key. You didn't supply the Make or Model or device? Try to connect with a Ethernet Cable to verify the device is working properly. If it is connected to the computer with limited access it may be a computer issue? Reboot the Router and the computer, unplug the router, for 30 seconds or so, plug in, wait for self test, reboot computer, select the wireless from the list of Available Wireless Networks and connect. Post results.

It requires username and password how can i change this to setup my router to secure

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to setup a password or security on your router you need to access the Wireless Settings Page. To access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access the router page just open a browser then type, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security on the Dropdown next to Security Mode select either WEP or WPA. Then Personalize your Network Key. The Network Key serves as a password on your network to make it secure. Then Save the settings

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

Power light is red. Hub is OK. No wireless and Internet connects

Have you tried configuring your wireless settings? If your internet works hard wired, its just the wireless settings that need to be configured. Access the router's setup by going to and change the wireless channel. Make sure to check the wireless security as well and verify if you are using the correct wireless network key

Home wireless network

Most wireless1.gif networks are setup as infrastructure networks, meaning all communication is to/from a wireless access1.gif point/router that serves the same function as a switch/hub in a wired network as a central point to transfer communications from machine to machine. One works over the air the other through a wire.

There is an alternate form of wireless networking1.gif refered to as ad hoc -- in this version of wireless networking every wireless adapter1.gif can "talk" to any other wireless adapter configured with the same SSID (name) and security encryption (none, WEP, WPA). This is how somewhat less impromptu wireless networks are created similar to impromptu infrared networks some of us have used. One limitation of the ad hoc networks I have seen configured to date is access to the internet. I have posted an article where a stationary PC (required to be running for any other wireless machine to access the internet) with a wireless card in ad hoc mode could act as the router for wireless network but it required a cabled connection the internet. I suppose it could be a second wireless connection on a separate channel with a second wireless adapter in an infrastructure network but why? These types of networks are only recommended in another article for a limited (small) number of machines.

Based on this are you asking to create an ad hoc network to connect 2 PC's1.gif wirelessly without a wireless router1.gif or access to the internet from the wireless network (without a dedicated machine)?
