I am trying to install new RAM on my mother's Sony

I am trying to install new RAM on my mother's Sony VAIO PCG-K25 laptop. It had two slots, each with 256MB sticks in them. I replaced these with 512MB sticks, and the computer wouldn't boot. It wouldn't even load the BIOS. So I put the original RAM back in, and it booted just fine. I experimented with several different configurations and learned the following:
a) It will only boot if both slots are filled.
b) It won't boot if both slots have the new 512MB RAM in them.

Any other combination of the new and old RAM seems to work. As far as I can tell, none of the sticks seem to be faulty. I checked multiple times to make sure that both sticks were seated correctly, so I know that isn't the problem. And this motherboard has a max of 2GB of RAM, so I know that isn't the problem, either. The laptop is currently running fine with one 256MB stick and one 512MB one.

I don't know much about RAM, so I am stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- I can't tell if the new ones are PC2700 or not (they don't say on them, and searching for the part number hasn't turned up anything), but they seem to work when not paired with each other. The system recognizes the proper amount of memory. I just can't seem to use them both simultaneously.

- Unfortunately the computer is running Ubuntu Linux, so the offtek scan won't work.

- Would a max capacity of 1GB matter, though? Is that 1000MB, or 1024MB?

Nov 07, 2009

- As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to matter which slot the RAM is in, and although I can't tell whether the new 512MB ones are PC2100 or PC2700, the information I've found online seems to indicate that it can use either. And it seems to use the new RAM with no problem, as long as there is only one stick of it paired with one of the old ones.

make sure they are compatible with your computer, there are alot of electronic stores (circuit city) was the worst at it, but will sell you the wrong ones and say they are backwards compatible.. usually P4 2.8 can run PC2700, some run PC2100, which im hoping yours is PC2700... if so, make sure they are NON-ECC also... i would just get 2 1 gig PC2700 DDR 200pin sticks and stick em in... good luck

Go to www.offtek.co.uk They deal with/supply all memory chips.

They do a free scan to ascertain your correct upgrade. Gives you readout info of your requirements.

As per the standard configuration of Sony VAIO PCG-K25 the max RAM capacity is 1GB

Make sure you are using PC-2700 type memory modules.

Thank you for choosing Fixya

- Max capacity woud be max of 1024mb, i.e. 2 modules of 512 in each socket.

if you are using 256 + 512, try exchanging the slot to confirm both the slots are capable of handling 512mb.

Try the above with both the memory stick. It is possible that one of the memory type may be pc2100 and other pc2700 and that may be the reason.

Please let me know output.

- to check the type and speed of the memory from Linux command use
dmidecode -t 17

Nov 07, 2009

- Both (256 and 512) sticks here are showing as 133 mhz. Please let me know if you have provided the output of both 512 sticks. Probably it is possible that there might be a difference in speed (other module may 266mhz instead of 133mhz) Please confirm.

- Ok, there does not seem to be any issues with the memory modules. I am sure they are all fine. I really appreciate all your efforts to perform all the possible steps to get this resolved but unfortunately we are still where we started.
I would need to do some more research in this regards to find out a reason for this issue. I will get back to you within 48hrs with another reply.

Thanks for your co-operation
