Step one: Check the ink cartridges
HP doesn't guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink. If the ink cartridges have been refilled, try replacing them with genuine HP ink cartridges.If you have checked the ink cartridges and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step two.
Step two: Print a test page
Verify that there is plain white paper in the input tray.
Press the OK and Help buttons simultaneously. A two-page Extended Self Test Diagnostic Page prints.

In the Print Quality Pattern section on the second page of the test page, look at the color blocks for any lines.

If the colors are still wrong in the Print Quality Pattern color blocks, print a document to determine if the issue has been resolved.
If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step three.
Step three: Check the printer settings
In the software application you are trying to print from, click File and then clickPrint . The Print dialog box opens.
Verify that your printer is selected and then click Preferences . The Printing Preferences dialog box opens.
Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
The Printing Shortcuts tab lists most printing needs, but you might need to modify some of the options.
Options on the Printing Shortcuts tab include:
General Everyday Printing
Photo Printing Borderless
Photo Printing with white borders
Two Sided (Duplex) Printing
Presentation Printing
Fast/Economical Printing
Postcard Printing
Hagaki Printing
NOTE:
These are general printing shortcuts with pre-selected settings.
To change the settings from those available on the Printing Shortcuts tab, click the Features or Color tab.
Options on the Features or Color tab include:
Print quality : If you are unhappy with the quality of your printouts, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
Paper type : If one of the options matches your paper type exactly, choose it rather than Automatic.
Paper size : Make sure this matches your paper.
Print in Grayscale : Print a document in shades of gray.
Orientation : Specify how the document is positioned on the page.
Paper Source : Select the tray that you want to use for printing.
Two sided printing : Print on both sides of the paper.
Color Management : Specify the color space that the printer will use to interpret image data.
Pages per Sheet : Specify the number of pages in the document that will be printed on each sheet.
If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step four.

- Step four: Check ink levels
Setup on the printer.
Press to select Tools and then press OK .
Press to select Display Ink Gauge and then press OK .
Each icon corresponds to the ink cartridge that is the same color as the icon. The icons are also in the same order, from left to right, as the cartridges in the printer.
If any of the ink cartridges are empty or low on ink, proceed to Step five.
If none of the ink cartridges are empty or low on ink, proceed to Step six.
Step five: Replace the ink cartridgeReplace any ink cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink.
Verify that the unit is on.
Open the ink cartridge door.
Squeeze the gray tab below an ink cartridge slot to release the gray latch and then lift the latch.
Pull the ink cartridge toward you out of its slot to remove it.
R the new ink cartridge from its packaging.
Hold the ink cartridge by the handle and then slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot.
own on the gray latch until it clicks into place.
Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each ink cartridge that needs to be replaced.
Close the ink cartridge door.
If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step six.
Step six: Clean the printhead
Verify that there is plain white paper in the input tray.
Press Setup .
Press to select Tools and then press OK .
Press to select Clean Printhead and then press OK . A test page prints.
Retry the print job.
If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step seven.
Step seven: Service your product
If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

C6230 will not copy or print with black ink only. If I print a text document and I change one word to red, the document prints just fine. But if I leave it all black it will print a blank page. Same with copying. Yet the display shows that the black cartridge is 1/4 full.

My HP Photosmart C6280 is making horrible clunking noises whenever I print anything in colour. It will not make this noise when I print the black parts of a document, but when it gets to the coloured sections it makes a very bad clunking noise. I recently replaced the 2 ink cartridges. After I replaced them it started making this noise. I have cleaned the printhead and aligned the printer.
