... "D" can represent any drive in your computer... What in specific are you saying is missing? Do you have a cd-rom drive that's not recognized in windows at all? Any drive can have any letter. Just because you don't have "D" but have "c" and "e" doesn't mean "d" is missing.. just not plugged in at the moment.

Wrong partition

There are companies that can restore your drive and recover from a format etc. I would place your old drive in the laptop and clone it to your new drive to get it to work.

Missing operating system

If you are missing the operational sysem it is more than likely a hard drive issue. If you have the installation cd to recover your system try it now, if it fails the hardware is the problem, first remove it and reseat it back in place, if this fails the hard drive will need to be checked for replacement.

My maxtor external hard drive has done a scheguled Plan b backup but files that I removed from my master hard drive to free up space because I had them saved on my external hard drive are now missing from...

When a file is delete, it's still there on the drive, just as before; all that happens is that the file table marks it as free space and changes its name so it's no longer visible. There are a number of "undelete" utilities available, including several good ones, like asoftech data recovery that helped me before:

reboot and enter bios to see if hard drive is detected in bios, if the hard drive is detected and still will not boot use recovery console to recover the OS.<ALT><F10>

If the bios does not recognize tthe hard drive, replace hard drive.
