Question about Canon BJC 85 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Runs through the motions, however, no ink to paper

Please help. Can't afford to keep buying new portable printers. :(
I have a Canon BJC-85 portable bubble jet printer. I just returned from being at sea on a fast frigate for almost 3 months (that was fun). What wasn't fun was that when I went to hook up the laptop and print a doc, the printer made all the right sounds and moves, but no ink on paper. I replaced the cartridge and also its housing (all new) and again, action but no ink to paper. I ran the maintenance deep cleaning several times from the control panel and still same thing, no ink. The printer worked perfectly before I went on the boat. It sat disconnected until my return. Obviously, it wasn't glad to see me; such rebellion. My notebook is a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV37 for what it's worth. Such a frustration. I know bullets are cheaper, however, that's not an option. What should I do Oh Great One?
Thanks. -Johnnie R. AKA Radar

Re: runs through the motions, however, no ink to paper

If you changed the ink cartridge and the printhead......try removing the cover and make sure all the data ribbons are connected properly. The widest one that goes from the top to the main circuit board can be damaged quite easily. A pinch or hole will stop data from being transmitted from the PC to the printhead. The printer will go through all the motions but nothing comes out. Also check the rest of the plugs and cables. Canon may suggest you need a new Chassis Platen (guts). But unfortuantely, they do not make or stock those anymore. Our company bought the last of their stock. Time to look on eBay.

What's the name of a canon printer that can print A3 size bond paper?

There are many A3 Canon printers, but let me mention two, one's the cheapest and the other one of the most reliable.
1. Canon BJC-5100 is the cheapest and one of the smallest A3 printer ever. It costs around $50.
2. Canon Laser Shot LBP3500 is another reliable and affordable Laser A3 printer. It costs around $850 to $900 (prices may vary).

These are not the only available Canon A3 printer, there are many more, you'll be able to find the best suit for your needs and requirements. Almost all printer supports bonded papers (like executive bond), there's nothing to worry about, but note that some don't support Photo paper or Thick/heavy paper.
For more details visit the canon website (click here to find out more A3 canon printers).

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

BJC 85 not printing after head replacement

I have similar problem. Print head won't print, then I clean with alcohol, and get rid of old ink inside. But then head seems to just shut down. I have several print heads and printers that have plenty of ink, but head won't work. I refuse to think the print head will break so easily. I used my BJC 85 for YEARS with no problem whatsoever, and suddenly, since last winter, I have 4 printers that have stopped printing.
I usually end up just buying another used printer on ebay until that one stops printing.

I just installed a brand-new color cartridge (still sealed) in my Canon BJC-85. My computer recognizes the printer and starts to go, but after the page runs through, no print. Any ideas?

The problem you are having is with the print head, not the printer.

Canon print heads, even new factory sealed ones, can end up being old and dried out because they didn't put expiration dates on them, and it's very possible to buy one of these that is dried because of that. There a a couple things you can try to get it printing.

First, try running the printer through one DEEP cleaning cycle. Sometimes that will prime and old " New " print head and get the ink flowing.

If that does not work, you can try wetting a paper towel with some rubbing alcohol and letting the print head sit on that for a couple minutes. If you see color starting to bleed out on to the towel, that is good because it means the ink is starting to flow through. Rubbing ( isoprophyl ) alcohol is safe to use because the conon ink is 65% alcohol.

If that does not work one last thing to try would be to put the print head up to a vacuum cleaner and try drawing it with the vacuum for about 30 seconds, and then blotting it on a paper towel. If none of those work, you'll need to get a new print head.

BJC-85 Not printing. New BC-10 and BCI-10. Paper loads normally

The problem you are having is with the print head and not the printer. Unfortunately, with these canon print heads, they are not dated, so it is possible to install a print head that was bought new and sealed, but is still dried out because it is old.

Try running the print head through one deep cleaning cycle, this sometimes will start to get an old print head flowing.

Deep cleaning cycle can be found by going to PRINTERS , right clicking on the BJC icon, selecting PROPERTIES from the drop down menu, and then selecting the MAINTAINENCE tab.

Check to make sure that the ink tank in the print head isn't dry. Even a new print head can have a dry tank if it's old.

CANON BJC-85 Won't print black...

Turn on printer, press cartridge button, remove cartridge. On left side of remaining cradle, unsnap the cradle, lift up and remove. Take the cradle to your sink, wet a paper towel, and GENTLY wipe the long print head with the wet paper towel. Then run a small stream of clear cool water through the cradle, from the round pad that your cartridge rests on, until the pad looks ink-free. Dry everything with tissues and a hair dryer set on low, replace cradle in printer, replace cartridge, turn on printer, press Resume until it beeps three times, which runs the deep cleaning program, and after the procedure is finished, your printer will print as new.
