What does this mean? HL-DT-ST-DVD ROM

Normaly means that the drivers assigned to the device are either not installed correctly or are not working or there could be a conflict with another device installed in the pc.

To rectify it go to control panel system, then click the device manager tab, once that window opens it will show a list of all installed components, any components that have a yellow caution sign next to it means its not installed correctly or not working as explained above.

I would right click the item & then click update driver, if you have the disc with the driver on it then insert it, if not you can always let it search online for a driver, sometimes windows can find a suitable driver for it in its database of drivers that comes with most of their O/S.

Once its done the list will be refreshed & if its been succesful the yellow mark will dissapear.

This mean that the driver for the device is either incompatible or not installed.
Try installing a updated driver for the device and it should be good.

This is generally a problem with drivers or IRQ assignment, in case with CD/DVD drives it is the IRQ, as they do not require drivers for the popular operating systems. Other possible reasons are cable or drive damage, the worst - damaged bus on the mainboard.
