If it's a PS2 connector (round), try rebooting while it's plugged in.
If it's USB, unplug it and when you plug it back in listen for the USB beep, it should give you a notification saying that there was a problem or that it was successful. If an error occurs, try plugging into another USB port and see what it does. If it then works, you have a bad USB port, if not, make sure you don't need any special software (rare). If it's a standard mouse, should be plug and play.

I bought a sandisk adaptpor for my laptop last night from Radio Shack. Inseted the sd in my slot but nothing happens. I see nothing pop up or if the thing is registering with my pc. Is the slot bad or what?
