Is it E74 or F74? I think it is a system hardware fault. How old is it? Microsoft list the warranty period as 1 year, but if it is within 3 years of purchase (or manufacturers date) they will fix it free as it is a known problem with the older 360's. The newer ones are meant to have different heat sinks and this problem isn't so common on them. Most xbox 360s fail and overheat eventually it seems.
They will fix it free if it is within the three years - I know - I got one of mine fixed. Go to the Microsoft xbox 360 website and follow the options there. they will arrange collection from you and it took about ten days to get fixed and returned.
IF it has been modded and the seals on the back are broken forget sending it back. They won't touch it. Have a look on line or Ebay, there are guys on there in most places that will fix it for a fee. Maybe get yours flashed when they are doing it? It is up to you and what you wish to do with it.

- shouldn't matter - you can register it to yourself online at the Microsoft website. It is what I did - my first 360 was second hand to me and I still managed to register it. Apparently when they fix them now they use a later model heatsink which can solve the problem. All the best!

3rrod or e74 are common faults with the 360, it says that its a "general
hardware failure" which could mean anything really. In truth its the lead
free solder that cracks with so much heat and as a result the Xbox 360
fails causing the 3rrod (3 red rings of death).
You will need to get a 3rrod repair kit or get someone to fix it for you,
To remedy this you need to strip the console down and replace what's called the X-Clamps, at the same
time replace the heat-sink paste and then you need to re-heat the whole board. We use a special IR over
which re-bakes everything and re-seats the solder properly, a lot of people use a heat-gun but you have
to be very careful.
there are guides available on the internet. I'm in the middle of
producing one right now that I will make available free of charge for all
fixya members.

I turn on my Xbox 360 and randomly it turns off.. I have switched the games out to see if the problem was in the game but I later found out it was the console. I have been playing it recently and haven't run into the problems until today. It gives about 15 minutes of play time before shut down with no notice. I have played games for an hour even yesterday with no problems.
