the igniter was bad i replaced it with a new one (seemed simple enough) but when i put it on broil or bake the igniter doesn't turn red, is there something i'm not doing?

The igniter is in 'series' with the gas coil that operates the gas valve. The gas coil is probably bad. You can replace the coil not the whole valve. Go to repair clinic.com and put in the model number and they will have it.
