I lost all sound output, except for Stereo, on my HTR-500 Onkyo system. When trying to switch to Dolby or All Channels the unit immediately turns off. Any ideas on how to best address?

Some info from the manual: The Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player is connected to
the AV receiver with a digital audio connection (coaxial,
optical, or HDMI).
ā¢ The listening modes you can select depends on the format of the input signal. To check the format, see "Displaying Source Information"
ā¢ While a pair of headphones is connected, you can select the following listening modes: Mono, Direct, and Stereo.
ā¢ While Speakers A and B are on, you can select only the
Direct, Stereo, Mono, or T-D (Theater-Dimensional) listening mode.
Plus this Bit of info on the speakers A and B buttons. While Speakers B is on, channels are reduced to 2.1 in the
main room.
If you can access the speaker configuration it should provide test tones to each speaker. If you can't the speaker A and B are not set right.
If you have pressed the stereo or mono button no sound will be heard except from the front two or the sub.

In general, your PC's sound card (and its controlling software) will determine what it can connect to. Even the most basic PC would have stereo analog output via the typical green 1/8" connector or a headphone jack that easily adapts to RCA pair for REAL audio connection. Any Line Level input EXCEPT PHONO would accept the PC's output. The output level would be controlled by the sound card software and settings. More-advanced sound cards would have similar adaptable 5.1 or 7.1 (paired) analog outputs and / or digital audio outputs that conform to the s/pdif or Dolby Digital standards. A digital-capable receiver would accept 44.1 kHz for normal CD or DTS sources. Some diddling with the output sampling frequency might allow digital multichannel audio to be decoded by the receiver.
The only way to get Dolby 5.1 audio out of the Xbox will be via fiber optic cable from the Xbox to a Dolby Digital amplifier - which will output a decoded 5.1 signal to a 6 channel amplifier and 5 speakers and one sub-woofer. I doubt the Logitech speaker system has a Dolby 5.1 decoder built in with the amplifier for under $100, but I can't say for sure. If the Logitech has a an optical (or TOSLink) input, connect it to the Xbox and follow the instructions below.
To configure your audio settings, follow these steps:
Start the Xbox 360 console without a disc in the disc tray.
In the System section of the Xbox Dashboard, select Console Settings.
In the Console Settings area, select Audio.
In the Audio Settings area, configure settings for analog output or digital output:
Analog output settings:
Dolby Pro Logic II: Select this setting for stereo systems or Dolby Pro Logic II-compatible systems.
Mono: Select this setting for systems that do not support stereo output.
Note If you have connected to Xbox LIVE and downloaded any AutoUpdates, the Mono option will not be available.
Digital output settings:
Digital Stereo: Select this setting to use digital stereo output.
Dolby Digital 5.1: Select this setting to use Dolby Digital output.
Enable WMA Pro: Select this setting to enable WMA Pro pass-through if your receiver supports the WMA Pro format.
Note You must use one of the following cables to support digital output:
It looks like the audio output was changed on the player so that it doesn't output 5.1. Enter the setup menu on the player and change DTS to output DTS instead of what be labled as stereo or L/R and Dolby Digital to output Dolby Digital instead of whatever else it is set to.
PCM mode will not output dobly digital, use the digital cable connection, not RCA cables, set DVD audio output menu to Dolby digital or DTS. On DVD software menu setup select audio then Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Surround.
DTS-HDMA and Dolby TrueHD cannot be passed to your receiver via bitstream on the PS3. DTS-HDMA cannot be decoded either so you're out of luck there.
Dolby TrueHD can be decoded internally on the PS3 assuming your firmware is up to date. Set the Blu-ray HDMI output to PCM and you can then pass it to your receiver.
If this doesnt work, do a system update on your PS3.
