I have had exactly the same problem, less than 2 years old, stays on medium and drains very quickly. Having had a look at the manual posted by Robotek I left it in full sunlight for a couple of days and it is now on full for the first time in 6 months. It is a limitation of the cells so I have just accepted it, it's still a great watch.
So - try it in FULL AND DIRECT sunlight for a couple of days and if this doesn't work maybe it does need a new battery. Not sure how this will work in the winter, but sitting on a table near a window didn't charge before it either.
My G-Shock is doing the same thing, it won't stay charged for more than a day, and it's only a couple years old. Does anyone know how long it should take to fully charge?

My GW-300 also started losing the ability to fully recharge recently. I ordered a new rechargable battery and after replacement it works fine again.

I have the same watch and mine just started flashing charge also. I am going to replace the battery and see if that doesn't fix it. I think the fact that it is winter and the watch hasn't been exposed to much sunlight has a lot to do with it.
Hey all, here is a site that has good instructions on how to change the battery in your G-Shock watch. Sounds like you are suffering a low batt problem.
If you want to ensure you still have a the same water resistance rating, I do suggest that you take it to a watch guy to have it replaced for you. They clean switch contacts also and you keep water resistance rating. Good Luck and vote this as a "FixYa". Cheers

But then the instructions I have given may not spply to you if you have a "solar"powered watch where a special type of rechargeable battery is used. Even rechargeable batteries dont last for ever and have a finite number of charge/discharge cycles. If your watch does not appear to be charging, Casio have explicit instructions on how to bets generate a charge from the sun. If attempts to charge fail... it is probable that your "rechargeable" battery is failing and will need to be taken to a Casio agent for replacement.

oh, and here is a link to a user manual for this series
Replace the rechargeable ctl1616 which costs 20 bucks or more with a cr1616 about 1 buck, works fine and I never have to put up with the dreaded blank screen. Before this fix I replaced the rechargeable ctl1616 twice, each one died after about two years. Now I just use the lithium cr1616, never a blank screen again.

A month or two ago my gw-300 stopped charging. At first if I left it in direct sunlight for a few hours it would come back on, but after a few minutes it would start flashing "charge" (or something like that ... It doesn't show anything anymore so I can't check) I happened upon another gw-300 owner and he said that his battery died as well. He said that he called Casio and that they replaced it no problem. I'm going to try the same thing.
I'm having the exact same problem, a g-shock bought less than 2 years ago has been reading med charge for a few months (and the backlight quite working) but on friday 1/4/08 i woke up and it was blank and "charging." Its been that way since
