My 1/2 hp craftsman garage opener was working great up until last night. the door started to go down, got about 2 feet and went back up. I checked the unit and found that the mounting screws on one side had loosened to the point that the motor unit would move forwards and backwards just enough to cause the problem. so I tightend everything back up knowing that this was the issue and it did work twice and upon the 3rd try it stopped and went back up again. is it possible that it is to tight and binding the wheel? Nothing should have changed much from before and I know the unit is in good working condition. Do I need to disconect the chain and reattach it? thanks in advance.
It sounds like it is out of alignment. The motor does detect excess pressure incase something or someone is underneath and the light sensor is not detecting anything. The pressure on the motor does change from when the door is all the way up to when it has the full weight of the door on the chain before it touches down. The spring offsets most of the weight of the door, but it still takes weight. Maybe when the motor is taking more of the weight, it is still shifting in a way to throw off the alignment. Also, you could disconnect the door from the chain, try manually moving the door and see how much weight the motor is taking at what points. Good luck!

The mis-alignment sounds very possible, I will try running it manually and see how it goes. thanks for the quick response.

I just changed out the gear and sproket assembly with no problem. The nylon gear was badly worn. Now, with or without the door engaged in the trolley, when I push the door opener, the motor runs in one direction for three seconds, stops and reverses direction for another three seconds. I verified the eye beam is aligned and not the cause of the problem. The power head lights do not blink when this start, stop and reverse happens. There's no binding of the motor and sproket, the chain can be moved easily by hand. Can you help? Thanks, Joe at joe.bittner@att.net
