I'm in the same boat you are. I've got a AC3 Sony DSS and can't make the S-Link work either. There are respectable sounding folks on this news group that swear it will, but I've had no luck. I've given up and use the IR Blaster. The trick with the Blaster is to NEVER cancel a timed event while recording. If you do, it will screw up the VCR control from the DSS receiver from that time forward. The only known fix is to turn off the DSS receiver for 10 minutes so it can "reset" the timer. There have been several threads on alt.dss over the past few months about this. No doubt they will be repeated when somebody gets the energy to go through it all over again. The IR Blaster problem looks like a mistake by Sony when writing the timer program. I don't know about the S-link issue. Maybe is was designed only to turn on a Sony TV. And it might work on all other Sony VCR's/DSS combo's except mine. But on the S-Link issue, Sony is at fault for not clearly stating in the VCR or DSS manuals what functions the Control S/S-link features should be able to perform. I you make any discoveries about this, please do post them. A lot of people are watching for a fix.

In article <6lipls$a7 @newsd-113.bryant.webtv.net>, SUPER-DRA @webtv.net (Mark Pollard) says:
Which DSS model, which S-VHS model? I have an AD-2 reciever and an SLV-R1000 deck, and have none of these problems, nor with my SLV-975 or -795.
Are you using a mono or stereo S-link cable?
